Marion N. Grout
Died Dec. 25, 2014

SUTTONS BAY - Marion Grout, 93, passed away while visiting with family in Highland Park, IL, on the evening of December 25, 2014.

  Marion was born to Albert B. and Lucile Warner Neuenswander September 20, 1921 in Oakdale, Nebraska.  She attended the Lincoln School of Commerce in Lincoln, Nebraska and Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois.  Marion was married to then Navy Lt. James D. Allen in Omaha, Nebraska on July 2,1944, he  died November 25, 1972.  She was married to Roy K. Thomas, Jr. in Northport on October 11, 1975 and he died September 10, 1979.  Marion married to Richard A. (Dick) Grout in Suttons Bay on May 3, 1986, who survives.

  Marion was a member of Suttons Bay Congregational Church.  She served on several Church boards and committees.  Marion was a member of Little Garden Club of Leelanau County, member of Chapter EM PEO; she served as President of Northport Woman's Club and Leelanau Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

  Marion enjoyed traveling with her husband, visiting such places as Venice, Malta, Moscow, Fiji, Australia, Morocco, Holland, Istanbul, Greek Islands, Norway, China, Alaska, Egypt and South Africa.  In recent years she took pleasure in small ship river cruises throughout Western Europe, the midwest and Pacific northwest.

  Marion is survived by daughters Janet Allen (Jerrold) Beger of Highland Park, IL, Catherine Allen (Jeff) Hufford of Hinsdale, IL; stepchildren Donna (Francois) Mouzard of Gatineau, Quebec, Douglas (Janet) Grout of Jefferson, Ohio, Bruce (Carol) Grout of Holcomb, Georgia; her sisters, Joan Harvey of Omaha, Nebraska, Claudia Beck of Louisville, Kentucky, and Dr. Sue Green of Baltimore, Maryland; her grandchildren Jonathan Beger, Justin (Denise)Beger, Matthew Hufford, Lindsay (Chris) Frost; step grandchildren Christian (Anile) Mouzard, Stephanie (Jesse) Bowden, Ian Grout, Travis (Liz) Grout, and Kaitlin and Hunter Grout and five great grandsons.

  A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 16 at the Suttons Bay Congregational Church with family greeting friends a half hour prior.

Lyle A. Graves
Died December 19, 2014
BINGHAM TOWNSHIP – Lyle A. Graves, 92, of Bingham Township, passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2014 at his home.
  Lyle was born March 3, 1922 in Richmond, MI the son of Charles and Isabel (Huwe) Graves. He attended high school in Detroit at Denby, Cass Tech, and finally at Detroit School of Applied Science eventually becoming a Professional Engineer providing machinery design for the automotive industry. He closed his business and retired with his wife Alma to Leelanau County in 1978 where he enjoyed playing pool, fishing, golf, and being with his family.  As a young man, Lyle served his country in the U.S. Navy during the WWII.
  Lyle is survived by his children, Larry (Barbara) Graves of Suttons Bay, Glenn (Lee) Graves of Olympia, WA, Christine (Harry) Meyer of Helendale, CA, Leslie Dailey (Richard Gardner) of Lewisville, CO; his grandchildren, Cynthia (Garrick) Opie, Bethany (Daniel) Stowe, Brian (Sandra) Graves, Jon (Beth) Maki, Uriah (Ali) Dailey, Emily (Chad) Stevens, Jon (Ami) Graves; his great grandchildren, Bryce, Brayden and Grayson Opie, Zachary and Sophie Stowe, Lillian, Lauren and James Graves, Tyler, Graham and Chloe Maki, Caitlyn, Gavin and Eric Stevens, Giffin and Georgia Graves, Celia and Nora Dailey.
  He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Mae (Lucas) Graves in 1998, a brother, Lloyd Graves and a sister, Lura Doherghty 
  Private family services will be held at a later date.

Margaret J. Stallman
Died December 11, 2014
SUTTONS BAY – Margaret Josephine Stallman, 93, of Suttons Bay, passed away Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014 at Tendercare of Leelanau.
  Margaret was born Oct. 15, 1921 in Suttons Bay the daughter of Gordon and Selma (Carlson) Swanson.  On Aug. 25, 1941 at the Holy Rosary Church of Isadore she married Eugene Gabriel Stallman who preceded her in death on March 3, 2007.
  One of Margaret’s delights was that all of her children stayed in the area so she was able to share in her children and grandchildren’s daily lives.  Margaret was a very gentle person and so full of love for her family and she always had a never ending smile.
  She loved doing her crafts and drinking coffee with her friends and she especially loved the summers when her friends and family would come north and many of them stayed all summer, which she loved.
 
  Margaret was a homemaker most of her life and helped Eugene on their cherry farm.  Margaret had a beautiful heart and her door was always open to anyone who needed help.
  Margaret is survived by her children, Barbara Jean (Claude) Kovarik of Suttons Bay, Ralph Gabriel Stallman of Suttons Bay, Ruth Ann (Tom) Sleder of East Leland, Gerald Lee (Judith) Stallman 0f Bingham Township; twelve grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
  She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Anna, Eva, Martha, Ellen and her brothers, Herbert, Bunda and John.
  Services will be announced in the spring.

Bernice W. Shorter
Died Dec. 20, 2014

CEDAR – Bernice Wilma Shorter, 89, of Cedar passed away Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving children.

  Bernice was born June 17, 1925 in Provemont (Lake Leelanau) the daughter of Mady and Irvene (Belanger) Couturier.  On Sep. 30, 1944 at St. Mary’s Church of Lake Leelanau she married Keith Edward Shorter who preceded her in death on Sep. 15, 1991.

  Bernice worked her whole married life at Munson Medical center until retiring in 1978.  She loved to bake and her pies were loved by all.  She loved flowers and enjoyed music and dancing and always said, “wake up singing and you will never have to take medicine.”  She loved visiting with her children and playing cards with them and her grandchildren.
 
  She was very devout in her faith and prayed morning to night for all she knew.  She was full of kindness and love for anyone she came in contact with.  Mom has played a BIG part in all of our lives and is going to be deeply missed.
 
  Bernice is survived by three sons, Jimmy (Marge) Shorter of Maple City, Mike (Gertie) Shorter of Maple City, Denny (Kathie) Shorter of Cedar; five daughters, Linda (Ronald) April of Cedar, Diana (Felix) Rice of Maple City, Darlene (John) Sheffer of Cedar, Shari (Mike) Leabo of Suttons Bay, Connie (Jay) Frost of Maple City; her siblings, John Couturier, Gene Couturier, Dale Couturier, Gayle (Cindy) Couturier, LeVerne (Doris) Couturier, Merle Forton, Dora (John) Korson, a sister in law, Jean Couturier; her close friend Joseph Brzezinski; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
 
  She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith; three brothers, Don, Bernard (twin brother), Father Albert Couturier; sisters, Joanne Kishefsky, Rita Priest; brother-in-laws, Lou Forton, Alfred Priest; a twin daughter at birth; three brothers in infancy; and a grandson.

  A memorial mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 11 am. with a Rosary to be prayed one hour prior at Holy Rosary Church, Cedar.

Harriett J. DeRose
Died December 11, 2014

SUTTONS BAY, MI -- Harriett Jo (Cleaver) DeRose, 66, loving wife, mother, grandmother (“Mongie”), sister, aunt and friend died December 11, 2014 in Suttons Bay, Michigan surrounded by her family.  During the course of her extended illness with ovarian cancer, Harriett never complained and was always quick to smile and eager to share her joyous laugh.
 
Harriett was born April 19, 1948 in Nyssa, Oregon to Eugene and Ione (Benson) Cleaver.  She grew up on a farm loving the earth and all its creatures and had a passion for knitting from a young age.
 
She graduated from Nyssa High School and was a florist in Oregon before moving to Battle Creek, Michigan in 1979 with her beloved son Shane Burkhardt, with whom she was exceptionally close.  There she met Tony DeRose when he rode up to her sister Cheryl and brother-in-law Gary’s cottage on his motorcycle.  A romance ensued on Fine Lake, and they were married in 1982.
 
Mongie and granddaughter Victoria (Tori) enjoyed shopping, visiting the zoo, and doing art together in Mongie’s home studio.  She volunteered at Tori’s school, and Mongie and Tony (“Papo”) enjoyed attending Tori’s school performances together.
 
Harriett earned an associate degree in nursing from KCC, a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Michigan, and a master’s degree in public administration from Western Michigan.  She was an exceptional nurse with a special interest in holistic health.  She worked for more than 25 years in the Battle Creek community as a nurse, home health provider and hospital administrator.
 
In addition to her love of people, nature, the environment, animals (especially dachshunds), flowers (especially violets), and cooking (especially Mama DeRose’s spaghetti and meatballs), Harriett had a passion for knitting, quilting, and creating art using fiber and paper.
 
In addition to her husband Tony, son Shane and granddaughter Tori of Battle Creek, MI, she is survived by five siblings: sisters Cheryl (Gary) Zesiger Costley of Marco Island, FL; Joyce Cleaver Cannon and Lori (David) Cleaver Gallegos of Boise, ID; brothers Darrell Cleaver and Calvin Cleaver of Nyssa, OR; sister-in-law Victoria (Carl) Blain and brother-in-law Michael (Jane) DeRose of Ft. Wayne, IN; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A celebration of Harriett’s life featuring her artistic creations will be held in Battle Creek in the spring of 2015.

David L. Gilland
Died Nov. 20, 2014

LAKE LEELANAU – David Lee Gilland, 55, of Lake Leelanau, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014 in South Haven, Mississippi.

David was born on July 15, 1959, in Traverse City, the son of Kyran and Lenora (Botruff) Gilland.

David joined the Coast Guard in 1977 and attended boot camp the summer before his senior year of high school.  David graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Lake Leelanau in 1978.  He was stationed in Milwaukee, WI, until his honorable discharge in 1982.  David enjoyed stock car racing, NASCAR, fishing, and hunting.  He loved animals and most of all David loved to socialize. 

David followed in his father’s footsteps and began a career in truck driving and worked for many different companies over the years.

He belonged to the Trucker Charity Inc. and was a volunteer and Veterans Liaison for the charity.  He was a member of the Owner Operators Independent Driver’s Association, volunteered for the Special Olympics and participated in the Special Olympics convoy yearly.  Most of all, David had a heart of gold and truly loved his family.

David is survived by his parents; his children, Ryan (Laura), Kristin, and Tiffany; his granddaughter, Arloa; his brother, Terry Gilland; and sisters, Janet Schneider and Melinda Gilland; his niece, Kimberly McMullen; nephews, Justin Gilland, Alex Gilland, and C.J. Schneider; and very good friends, Paul Meier and Odessa “Vicky” Luke.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his brother, Jimmy; his sons, Kyran Lee and David Lee Jr.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Leland Community UMC with a visitation held one hour prior.  Pastor Daniel Hofmann will officiate.  Internment with full military honors will be held in the spring.

Daniel J. Schleef
Died November 26, 2014

 OMENA - Daniel John Schleef, 87, of Omena, passed away at home on November 26, 2014.
  Dan was born on September 29, 1927 in Norfolk, Nebraska, the eldest son of Rev. Alfred Herman Schleef and Meta (Simpson) Schleef.  He grew up in eastern Nebraska and later in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where his father was the pastor at First Lutheran Church.
  Dan graduated from Fort Smith High School.  He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas, a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science (now Kansas State University), and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Purdue University.  Dan subsequently made teaching his profession, and became Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the College of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of Cincinnati.  He retired from that institution in 1993 after a long and dedicated teaching career.
  Dan served in the United States Army occupation forces in central Europe between August 1946 and January 1948.  He was stationed in Linz, Austria.
  On April 14, 1956 Dan married Elizabeth Morgan of Cincinnati, Ohio, who survives him.
  Dan, Elizabeth and their two daughters began spending summers at Omena in 1965.  They soon fell in love with the natural beauty of Leelanau County.  In 1976, Dan and a small group of friends founded the Omena Woods Association, an organization dedicated to the preservation of undeveloped woodlands on New Mission peninsula.
  Throughout his life, Dan was admired and cherished by family, friends, colleagues and students for his intelligence, his sense of humor, his thoughtfulness and attention to detail, and his generosity.  He instilled in his two daughters a lifelong appreciation for learning, music, clarity of expression and intellectual curiosity.  Above all, he will be remembered for his unfailing kindness.
  In addition to his wife, Dan is survived by his daughter, Katy Schleef and son-in-law John Hadder of Reno, Nevada, and by his daughter, Joan Schleef of Grand Rapids, Michigan.  He is also survived by his brother, Rev. Roger Schleef and wife Elaine, of Richmond, Michigan.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Schleef of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and half-sister, Florence Annabel of Los Angeles, California.
  A private interment service will be held at Omena Hillcrest Cemetery.
