SUTTONS BAY – James Arthur Grant, 75, of Suttons Bay, passed away Friday, June 23, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Jim was born Jan. 24, 1942 in Lake Leelanau, the son of Arthur and Clara (Sylt) Grant.  On May 2, 1964, he married Jean Ann Drow of Lake Leelanau at St. Mary’s Church.

As a young man Jim served in the U.S. Coast Guard until after his daughters were born.  Jim transferred to the U.S. Air Force and retired with the senior enlisted rank of Master Sergeant completing 23 years of active service.

After retiring, Jim relocated to Northern Michigan and held several jobs including working for Frigid Foods, Leelanau Sands Casino, and Leland Township.  Jim was a member of the Little Finger VFW Post 7731 in Lake Leelanau.  For years, Jim was an active member giving his time to honor veterans in various VFW sponsored activities.

Jim enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.  One constant activity he enjoyed was being able to plan family get togethers that allowed all his children and grandchildren to attend.  Jim always made sure he attended the Grant Family Camp Out at Camp Timberline in Benzonia.  Each fall, he enjoyed Bow Hunting in Curtis which provided an opportunity for spending time with his sons and grandsons.

He was family orientated man, fun loving father who never met a stranger.

Jim is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Jean; his children, Carrie (Francis) Whaley, Diane (Steve) VanReenen, Steven (Carrie) Grant, James (Jennifer) Grant; his siblings, Marvin (Hazel) Grant, Doris Skipski, Julia Johnson, Louise Schaub, Betty (Cal) Cole, Bernice Conrad, Jackie Harrington; thirteen grandchildren; Tiffeny (Brian), Dustin, Kandice (Roger), Sean Michael, Jonathan, Stephanie, Katlyn (Ryan), Alex, Taylor, Dylan, Kaleb, Brendon, Rebekka and six great grandchildren; Madison, Sydney, Cole, Blake, Charlotte, and Corbin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Elmer and Eldon Grant.

The mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 1 with the family greeting friends at 9 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church of Suttons Bay.  Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery.  Father Leonard Paul will serve as celebrant.
