Joan J. Larson
1928 ~ 2017

Joan Jessylin Larson, of Leland and Naples, FL, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017 at Orchard Creek Rehabilitation Center, Traverse City, after suffering a stroke earlier this summer.  She was 89.

Joan was born on Feb. 4, 1928 in New York City, the daughter of William and Edith Tilford.  On Sept. 4, 1949 she married her high school sweetheart, Will Larson, in New York.  Joan worked for an insurance agency and raised her family in Buffalo, NY and Cincinnati, OH.  For the last 40 years Joan and Will split their time between Leland and Naples, FL, making many friends along the way.

Joanie was an avid bridge player and was a true “Townie” - she loved to walk around Fishtown visiting the Leland Merc, post office, and catching up with friends.   Joan enjoyed canning and freezing jams and treasured spending time with family and friends.

A celebration of Joan’s life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay, with visitation beginning at 12 noon.  Burial will be at a later date at Beechwood Cemetery, Leland.  Rev. Joshua LaFeve will officiate.

In addition to her loving husband of 68 years, Joan is survived by her son, Bob Larson; and two granddaughters, Billie Jacobs and Jessie Ligon.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Larson; and grandson, Joshua Ligon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Leland Library, PO Box 736, Leland, MI 49654, Fishtown Preservation Society, PO Box 721, Leland, MI 49654 and/or to the Will and Joan Larson Scholarship, c/o Leland Public Schools, PO Box 498, Leland, MI 49654.

ane and I had the privilege of knowing Joan from 31 years ago in Buffalo, NY. She had the gift of being a very caring and humble person constantly interested in the personal life of others. We shared laughter and even tears at times. But, never was she too busy to take time to provide helpful advice. Joan was loved by everyone and will be sorely missed. Sincerely, Tom and Jane Kegelman
