David A. Nordstrand
Died Feb. 24, 2018

NORTHPORT – David Allen Nordstrand, 69, of Northport, passed away suddenly Saturday, February 24, 2018.

He was born in Manistee, Sep. 10, 1948, the son of Ivan and Marjorie (Nelson) Nordstrand who have preceded him in death.  David is survived by his wife, Yvonne; his children Clara (Seth) Kritzman, Alexandra Lowery, and Michael (Rebecca) Dujanowicz; grandchildren, Ethan, Zachary, Matthew, Trey, and Charlie; mother-in-law, Teresa Wilk; and brothers, Mark Nordstrand and Philip (Linda) Nordstrand.

David was a Head Engineer, Subject Matter Expert in Environmental Control at DTE Energy.  He was a specialist in solid fuel blending and spent a portion of his early career in noise pollution.  He retired after more than 35 years with DTE Energy.  In his retirement, David was active in the Village of Northport’s civic life.  He made contributions to the planning commission, Village council, and addressed environmental issues.

David was raised on the Old Mission Peninsula.  He spent summers as a teen working as a foreman at local cherry orchards.  David loved the out of doors.  He enjoyed every season on the Leelanau Peninsula – not just the four.  He was an avid bicyclist and cross-country skier.  A kayaker, the Muskegon River and The Bay were favorites.  In the evenings, you could find David, sitting in his favorite chair by the fireplace reading a political biography or historical non-fiction.

David enjoyed bringing weary houses back to life.  The “go-to-guy” for just the right tool and ready consultant on any home repair project.  Like a true Engineer, David believed anything could be fixed- from small electronics to household items.  Even a forgotten bicycle left at the street corner found new parts and new life in his shop.

A beloved husband, father and friend, David had the gift of being able to apply his good nature, wit and intellect, to assist anyone with any sort of issue, no matter how major or minor.  He was always willing to help.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, March 15, 2018 at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 220 W Nagonaba St; Northport, Michigan 49670.  The family will greet friends starting at 10:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Lawrence Technological University in David’s name. Lawrence Technological University 21000 W 10 Mile Road, Southfield, MI 48075 or at www.ltu.edu/giving/online-gift.asp

David was my first cousin, but we have not seen each other since we were teenagers and our families climbed the Michigan dunes together. I was so saddened to hear of his untimely passing but glad to read of his full life and loving family... especially his 5 grandsons! He was blessed. My condolences and prayers go out to all who loved and miss cousin David. ~Kris Petersen Enlow Armstong, Boston MA
