Sarah Wolcott Straus, of Northport, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at the Northport Highlands.

Sarah lived life to its fullest. While she lived all over the United States and the world, her home was always in Leelanau County. She was born in Denver on December 9, 1931. A daughter of an Episcopal Minister (Leonard Wolcott and Anne Smith), she grew up in Oregon, Indiana, and Kenosha, Wisconsin. As a child, Sarah spent most of her summers at the family cottage in East Leland which her grandfather built. She graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and studied for a year at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Upon her graduation in 1954, Sarah worked for several years with the CIA in Washington DC and London.

She met her husband Ulrich (Rick) Straus in Washington while he was working at the Department of State. They married in Trinity Church in New York City in 1959 and moved to Tokyo where Rick started his first Foreign Service post with the American Embassy. Sarah threw herself into learning Japanese language and culture. In 1965, they moved to Berlin, Germany, where she and Rick regularly travelled in East Germany to keep an American presence. Other postings for the State Department outside of Washington DC, included Rome, Italy and Bern, Switzerland. The last foreign posting was for four years in Okinawa, Japan where Rick served as the US Consul General.

Sarah began her interest in social work in Okinawa where she volunteered for the Pearl Buck Foundation to help children of American and Japanese parents. Sarah earned her master’s degree in social work from the University of Maryland in 1985. She worked for Prince Georges County, Maryland as a social worker for several years until she retired full time to Leelanau County. Sarah continued to work as a social worker in northern Michigan as a bereavement counsellor at Munson Medical Center.

Sarah treasured her time in Leelanau. She instilled her children with her love of the area. In 1985, she and Rick bought their property on Gills Pier Road. Sarah and Rick moved to their home on Gills Pier year-round in 1997. Sarah loved to swim, hike, ski and enjoy the outdoors during all four seasons. Marilyn I. Andresen, Died August 7, 2019

Marilyn I. Andresen
Died August 7, 2019

Traverse City - Marilyn Ilene Andresen, 91, of Traverse City passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at home, surrounded by her family.

Marilyn was born March 29, 1928 in Lansing, the daughter of Clare and Cora (Pearl) Gladden.  On December 31, 1950 in East Lansing, she married the love of her life Carl C. Andresen, who survives.

Marilyn graduated from East Lansing High School in 1946.  While working as a florist, she met Carl and shortly after they married.  Nine months after she and Carl married, Carl was drafted, joined the Navy and was sent to a Base in Florida.  She surprised everyone when she quit her floral job, packed everything up and moved to Florida to be with him.

During Carl’s service deployments Marilyn would stay with her mother in law at the Andresen Guest Inn in Glen Arbor.  She helped serve at the Kum and Dyne and worked at the Riverside Gift Shop.  After returning to Glen Arbor to raise their boys, Chris and Erik, she and a dear friend purchased the Riverside Gift Shop and ran it for a decade.

Throughout their marriage, the family relocated five times.  With each move she took care of the selling and buying of their home, finding a new job, and moving everything in order to be by her husband’s side.

Marilyn’s second love after her family was flowers.  No matter where they lived, Marilyn always had a beautiful garden and always worked in a flower shop.  People would specifically request her to make their corsages.  Her talent for floral design got her the job of floral decorator in the Pentagon, and she even decorated General Twining’s Christmas Tree.  It wasn’t until ten years after Carl’s retirement that Marilyn retired from the flower shops, and it was all so she could spend more time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her loving husband, Carl, Marilyn is survived by her son, Erik and Patti Andresen; her grandchildren, Annalies, and Christopher; her sister, Barbara; and sister-in-law, Dot.

She was preceded in death by her son, Chris Andresen; and her siblings, Harry Gladden and Norma Tracey.

A special thank you to Lisa Stewart, who was Marilyn’s caregiver over the last two years.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 1, 2019 at the Suttons Bay Lutheran Cemetery.  Pastor Jonathan Reid will officiate.

In leu of flowers the family asks donations be given to Leelanau Share Care in Marilyn’s name, 7401 E Duck Lake Rd. #600, Lake Leelanau, MI 49653-8701.

Mary Ann, lovingly known as Annie, was born in Grand Rapids on July 18, 1919 the daughter of John and Mary (Woolsey) Stanton.  In June of 1941 she married Jason T. Smith who preceded her in death on Oct. 10, 2002.

Mary loved animals; was active in donating to local humane societies.  She was a member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution and was very skilled in needlepoint.  Back in the day, Annie made her own cherry jam and loved shopping at Marshall Fields (to her friend’s friendly teasing, she never forgave Macy’s).  She was an avid reader and provided a great example of love and marriage with her husband Jason.

It’s important to note that Annie is a “Woolsey” girl and had very fond memories of Grandpa (Byron) Woolsey and her uncle Clinton Woolsey.  She was very proud of her heritage in Northport.   On July 21st, Annie celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family.  She reveled in the attention, the joy of family and friends, birthday cake and a glass of bubbly.

Annie is survived by her grandchildren, Amy Sara Rafferty, Carrie (Clayton) Carlson Johnson, Annie (Joshua) Carlson Welch; her great grandchildren, Tyler Johnson, Finley and Myers Welch and many loving nieces and nephews in Connecticut and California.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-one years, Jason; her parents John and Mary Stanton, her step-mother, Ella Stanton; her siblings, Jack Stanton, Patty Stauton, Richard Kanavel, David Kanavel; her children, Michael Smith, Sara Levan and Jennifer Mahan.

Friends are welcome to a celebration of Annie’s life from 2 to 7 p.m. at the family lake cottage on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019.

Private family burial will be held at a later date in Leelanau Township Cemetery, Northport.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cherryland Humane Society, 1750 Ahlberg Drive, Traverse City, MI 49686
