Died October 5, 2013

LAKE LEELANAU – Marvin Carl Egeler, 84, of Lake Leelanau, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
  Marvin was born Oct. 31, 1928 in East Leland the son of Harold and Delia (Alpers) Egeler. On Sep. 24, 1960 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Leland he married his loving wife of fifty three years, Gwendolyn E. Steffens-Garthe, who survives.
  Marvin graduated from Leland High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Sault Ste. Marie. After discharge from the service he worked one winter on the Ludington Car Ferry and then farmed potatoes and strawberries and then later cherries.
  He helped with the excavation of the Sugar Loaf Mountain Ski Resort and Timberlee Ski Resort. Marvin co-owned Little Finger Excavating with his brother Eugene which was later taken over by his nephew, Mike Egeler.
  Marvin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland and then a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Good Harbor.
  Marvin really enjoyed family gatherings, farming, his tractors, and his Ford F-150, affectionately known as “Marv’s Baby.”
  Marvin is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn; two daughters Tina (Lynn) Belanger, Cindy Plamondon; five step children, Peggy (Ken) Roush, Glenn (Penny) Garthe, Sharon (Bob) Howard, Wendy (Jim) VerSnyder, Carl (Shirley) Garthe, three siblings, Dorothy Polack, Robert (Lucy) Egeler, Alvin (Vera) Egeler, a sister in law, Helen Egeler; seventeen grandchildren, Shane (Cheryl) Balkcom, Faith Carey, Justin Roush, Brandi Roush, Geoff Garthe, Sara (Scott) Wikle, Melissa (Kevin) Staub, Roy (Ronda) Howard, Kelly Walter, Kevin (Kathleen) VerSnyder, Kristy VerSnyder, Seth Garthe, Samantha (Rodney) Seaberg, Claire (Jordin) Graber, Jack Garthe, Katie Belanger (Thad), Chelsea Belanger (Fiance' Ross); sixteen great grandchildren, Patrick Carey, Adam Carey, Dylan VanBlaricum, Kalynn Roush, Kayla Kellogg, Robert Kellogg, Maret Wikle, Tristan Wikle, Adeline Staub, Ethan Staub, Genevieve Staub, Ryan Howard, Joseph Howard, Ella Walter, Lena VerSnyder, Joshua Graber; a great great grandchild, Joshua Kellogg; and many loving nieces and nephews.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Eugene “Pete” Egeler.
  Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Leland. Rev. Robert W. Wurst, Jr.,
Pastor, Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church and Rev. Lawrence K. Matro, Pastor, Immanuel Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial in East Leland Cemetery will follow the service.
