BAY – Milford “Mel” J. Schaub, 85, of Suttons Bay, passed away on Wednesday,
Jan. 1, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Mel was born Aug. 5, 1928 in Provemont (Lake Leelanau)
the son of Lawrence and Della (Belanger) Schaub. On Oct. 26, 1946 at St. Mary’s Church of Lake
Leelanau with Father Linus Schrems officiating, Mel married his loving wife of
sixty seven years, Marie J. Schaub, who survives.
Mel worked for Grand Traverse Metal Casket
for seven years. Afterwards he spent
eighteen years with Parsons Aircraft Corp., becoming a supervisor. Mel also spent thirty five years as a home
and commercial builder.
Mel had the mind of an engineer and made his
own self-propelled lawn mower. He was an
auto mechanic for his girls and a neighborhood handyman. His charity work includes helping to
refurbish both St. Michael’s and Kateri Tekakwitha churches. Mel built furniture for his children and
grandchildren.
As a young man, Mel played baseball as a
center fielder. He enjoyed hunting and
fishing in Leelanau with his sons. Loved
his animals, cat and kit, and was a master gardener to his fruit trees and
vegetables.
Mel is survived by his wife, Marie; his children,
Leonard (Joyce) Schaub, Linda (Michael) Warren, Sharon Elzer, Mark (Ticia)
Schaub, Marlene (Garry) Plane, Lori Lingaur; his siblings, Marvin (Edith)
Schaub, Marcie Kedzie, Sarah (Blaise) Korson; sixteen grandchildren,
twenty-four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Terry
Schaub, and a sister, Jane Rexroat.
Visitation will be held today, Jan. 3 from 4
to 8 p.m. with the rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral
Home of Suttons Bay. The mass will be
celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday Jan. 4 at St. Michael’s Church of Suttons
Bay. Burial will be held in the spring
at St. Michael’s Cemetery of Suttons Bay.
Father Leonard Paul will serve as celebrant.
