Margaret “Muggs” White
2/18/1924 – 9/28/2014

Margaret “Muggs” White, a long-time resident of North Muskegon, MI, and Palm City, FL, died Sept. 28, 2014 in Traverse City, MI.  She was 90 years old.
Born on Feb. 18, 1924, in Philadelphia, PA, Muggs was raised in Wilmington, DE, where she graduated from Wilmington Friends School.  Her parents were the late John Harrison Sachs and Ruth Wilson Sachs of Wilmington, DE, and Gettysburg, PA.
Muggs attended Bradford Junior College, where she briefly hoped to substitute “Peg” for “Muggs,” but was thwarted on the first parents’ weekend when her father greeted her as “Muggsie” for all to hear.  She went on to receive her B.A. from Connecticut College in 1945, where she majored in English literature and nurtured a lifelong love of language, theater, and music (friends will remember her many spirited renditions of “The White Cliffs of Dover” and “The Persian Kitty”).  Following college, she worked for William Morrow Publishing in New York City, before marrying William Turner White Jr. in 1948.  They were married for 33 years until his death in Muskegon in 1981.
Muggs was a lifelong golfer, vying for the title of club champion many times and achieving that title more than once at Chikaming Country Club, Lakeside Michigan.  She also played briefly on the Women’s Super Senior golf circuit and scored 6 holes-in-one during her golf career, the most recent when she was 85.
Muggs is survived by her five children, Barb Bramley of Tucson, AZ, Chris Booth of Baltimore, MD, Susan Walters of Suttons Bay, MI, Linda White of Middlebury, VT, and Bill White of Lake Forest, IL; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Muskegon followed by a reception at 4 p.m. at the Muskegon Country Club.  Memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Community Foundation for Muskegon County and/or to the West Shore Symphony Orchestra.

Muggs was one fine woman. We were neighbors in Fairway Village for many years. She was a great golfer and has a great sense of humor. We had many good times together through the years. My utmost sympathy for the loss of your wonderful Mom.

I was saddened to read that "Muggs" has passed away. It has been some years since I have seen Mugg's but she was never forgotten when she left Muske gon. She was a golf friend here in Muskegon for years and we played many rounds of golf and will always remember those fun times with Mugg's. She was a very kind lady, tons of fun and she will always be remembered. My thoughts and prayers are with all of her family at this very difficult time. Mary Ann Bard
