1924 ~ 2014
A Celebration of Life will be held on
Saturday, Nov. 8 2014 at 1 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay,
with a friends and family gathering one hour prior, for Hilda Lucille Fox, of
Suttons Bay, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014 at home. She was 90.
Hilda was born
on Nov. 1, 1924 to Lester
and Nellie Dowling and was the beloved fifth child of ten
On February
12, 1949, in Mt. Clemens, Hilda married Fred Garland Harry Fox, who preceded
her in death on Sept. 30, 2003.
Hilda was an accomplished homemaker and
provider to her family, sewing full wardrobes for her children and herself in
addition to canning and preserving all manner of food for the pantry. All while a full-time factory worker then
full-time office clerk. She is famous for her canned applesauce and made her
last batch just two months ago.
When Hilda lost her vision some 20 years ago,
she never entertained self-pity and maintained her sense of determination and
positive attitude until the very end. An accomplished and prolific quilter, she
continued to create much sought-after quilts until her death. At the time of
her passing she had prepared 4 flannel masterpieces made specifically for
unknown families without financial means for Christmas gifts.
An avid reader, Hilda felt blessed to have
access to audio books provided by the National Library for the Blind and
enjoyed discussing the stories she “read”.
Hilda was patient, kind, and loving to all
who crossed her path. She was trusting
to a fault and always chose to see the good in even those who hurt her. Her final hours were spent in joyful
celebration of her 90 years of fruitful life, surrounded by family and friends.
Hilda is survived by her son, Dan (Carolyn),
daughters Vanessa (Ted) Fox Gruenwald , and Judy (Roy) Card; step-daughter,
Janice (Glenn) Kreger; siblings, Shirley Huey, Genevieve (Denton) Hyatt,
Leonard (Evelyn) Dowling, and Gladys Patent; numerous nieces, nephews,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with her two feline children, Jesse
and James who will sadly miss the pampering only a kitty mom can provide.
In addition to her husband, Hilda was
preceded in death by a beloved daughter, Sally (Patrick) King who passed
suddenly on February 8, 2012; her brothers, James, Kenneth and Leo; and
sisters, Evelyn, and Lela.
Memorials
