David R. Wonegeshik Sr.
Died June 10, 2017
TRAVERSE
CITY — David Rocque Wonegeshik Sr., 72, of Traverse City, passed away Saturday,
June 10, 2017 at Tendercare Health Center, Birchwood with his family at his
side.
David
was born July 26, 1944 in a log cabin in Northport, the son of Rocque Norman
Wonegeshik and Cecelia (Tepakeyah) Wonegeshik.
On Oct. 13, 1974 he married Patsy Jewel (Jones) Wonegeshik who preceded
him in death on July 7, 1988.
He
was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. He served in the U.S. Army reserves until he
retired. David enjoyed playing pool,
cards and was always joking with people; he really enjoyed people. David loved his family.
David
is survived by a son, David (Veronica) Wonegeshik Jr., a daughter, Cecelia
(Ray) Leavitt; two sisters, Margaret (Gerald) Rowley, Charlene John; 6
grandchildren, Keegan Drake, Jewel Jean Marie, Coby James and Dustin Anthony
Wonegeshik; Jerome David and Raymond Anthony Leavitt; and one great grandchild,
Donovan Anthony.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy; his parents Rocque and Cecelia; his
sisters, Bertha (Roy) Parkey, Amelia Fritz, Shirley (Eric) McDonald; brothers,
James and Robert “Butch” Wonegeshik.
Visitation
will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 15 at the Martinson Funeral
Home of Suttons Bay. The funeral service
will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 16 with the family greeting friends at 1
p.m. also at the Northport Indian Mission Church. Burial will follow in Leelanau Township
Cemetery. Rev. Samuel McClellan will
officiate.
