PESHAWBESTOWN – Terrance Charles Petoskey, 70, of Peshawbestown, passed away on Oct. 30, 2018 at Medilodge of Leelanau, after a brief cancer related illness, amazing how short the cancer trip is from stage 2 to stage 4, to a quiet slip into death. .

Terry was born June 6, 1948 in Traverse City the son of Sylvester “Pete” Francis Petoskey and Dorothy (Raphael) Petoskey.  He was a member, citizen of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, descendent of Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa and Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.  The defining event of his life was his mother’s death when he was young, the consequent dislocations, injuries and pains followed him to the end of his life. 

He graduated from Marquette High School with the Class of 1967. There he played football and began a life-long love of sports, (injuries sustained from sports precluded him from the army draft) Terry then attended Northern Michigan University for several years before moving on to a traveling life.

During the 1970’s; Terry lived and worked on the coasts of Louisiana (shrimp boats) California (forest work) Oakland (labor) and became a life-long Oakland Raiders fan spending many memorable moments in the sport stadiums. Terry was an avid sports fan, he loved watching baseball, football and golf.

He loved to play golf with his father, he loved to fish and camp with his brother Bob and he loved the randomness of conversation with his brothers on many adventures.  During the 1980s and early 90s, Terry was a substance abuse counselor (putting significant personal experience to work) with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community New Day treatment center helping other Indians overcome the grip of addiction, many Indians in Michigan benefited from his counseling.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, he worked in a bird food facility in Grand Rapids.  He became permanently disabled in early 2005. He was an avid reader and continuous patron of libraries.

Terry is survived by his siblings, Donna Swallows, John Petoskey, Leona May, Wyman Chippewa, Glen Petoskey, Eliza “Tootsie” Burns, Diana Taula, Joyce Petoskey, Greg Petoskey, Glenda Petoskey, Joan Petoskey, Bill Petoskey, Janice Petoskey; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Sylvester “Pete” and Dorothy Petoskey; his siblings, Robert “Bob” Petoskey, Gary Chippewa, Brenda Whiteye, Steve Petoskey and Karen Nichols.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 with the family greeting friends at 9 a.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.  Burial in Kateri Tekakwitha Cemetery will follow the services.  Sister Sue Gardner will officiate. Terry was a lifelong Catholic attending various churches most recently St. Francis in Traverse City, though Kateri Tekakwitha was his original home, and now, his permanent home.

Cheri L. Olvera Died Oct. 28, 2018

PESHAWBESTOWN – Cheri Lynne Olvera, 51, of Peshawbestown, passed away on October 28, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.

Cheri was born March 27, 1967 in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Bartlett and Elizabeth (Southbird) Gibbs.

Cheri was a very bright person.  In junior high she was accepted into an accelerated learning program and later became fluent in Spanish.  Her fluency is Spanish spurred a love of the culture, and she absorbed it into her life.  She loved to cook Spanish dishes and listen to Spanish music; she even took her family on a trip to Mexico.

Cheri was energetic and always on the move.  Her many friends loved her way of speaking her mind, but always being kind.  She had a loud and infectious laugh that got everyone to smile.  She would often laugh so hard she couldn’t make any noise.

Family was the most important thing to Cheri.  She stood as the family protector, making sure everyone was taken care of.  She was a beautiful, loving mother and will be dearly missed.

Cheri is survived by her children, Jeff (Michelle Marshall) Gibbs, Victor Olvera, Pablo Olvera, and Tony Olvera; her siblings, Joanne (Rog) Fox, Jeanette (Ollie) Pierce, Ronald Judson, Rosemary Judson, Elizabeth (Mason) Gibbs, Debra Fox; and many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson, Cashius, her sisters, Barbara Sheahan and Linda Holt, and her brothers, Leroy Judson, and Bartlett Gibbs Jr. in infancy.

Visitation will be held from 1 PM to 7 PM on both Tuesday, October 30 and Wednesday, October 31 at Cheri’s home.  The funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 1 at 2 PM, with family greeting friends at 1 PM at the Strongheart Center of Peshawbestown.  Rev. Thomas John will officiate.

SUTTONS BAY – Kathleen Ann Emeott, 75, of Suttons Bay, passed away on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at Cherry Hill Haven, assisted living facility, with her husband close by. 

Kathleen, also referred to those who knew her as “Kathy”, was born on Sunday, April 18, 1943 in Drayton Plains, Michigan, the daughter of Earl “Max” Morey and Shirley May (Gundry) Morey.  On April 30, 1963, in Saginaw, Michigan, she married Gerald Emeott, who survives.  Gerald and Kathy met at Ferris State University.  Kathy was pursuing a secretarial degree at the time.

Kathy had a passion for dogs, horses, reading romance novels, and shopping.  She had a zest for always looking for sales and loved to find name brands at the best prices.  She was a caring mother who taught her children how to become independent and hardworking individuals.

In her early family years, Kathy worked in the family grocery store doing the books and running the check out.  She loved to talk to the customers and always love to hear a story or two.

Upon retiring, she and Jerry headed to Florida to spend winters and catch up with long time friends.  Kathy also decided to become more involved with her horses.  She began to ride in shows and received many ribbons.

In addition to her husband of over 55 years, Kathy is survived by her children, Sherry (Dan) Maples, Scott (Penny) Emeott, and Shelly Bedord; and 7 grandchildren, Chantelle Erickson, Austin Emeott, Justin Emeott, Zakkeus Bedford, Korbin Bedford, Kelly Denning and Sandra Stout.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Shirley Morey.

Visitation will be held from 5 to the start of the service at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 1 at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.

Juanita B. Sundal, age 73, a resident of Homer Glen, IL, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Loyola Medical Center, with her family and friends, Pastor Mark and Donna Hein, at her side.
Juanita was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lockport. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family and friends.
Beloved wife of Inderjit Sundal; loving mother of Sheelah (James) Hanson and Aleesha (John) Kennedy; dear sister of Merrill (Phyllis) Johnson, Geri (late Rev. Charles) Pool, and Alvera (Rev. Bernie) Filbert; also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hans and Alice (Johnson) Johnson, and a sister, Patricia (late Frank) Frisk.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, IL, on Saturday, October 20, 2018.  Graveside services will be held at Suttons Bay Lutheran Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 24.

Peshawbestown -  Gary Allan Oskaboose 70, of Peshawbestown, walked on Monday, October 8, 2018 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

Gary was born November 8, 1947, in Holland the son of Russell Albert Oskaboose and Mable Katherine (White Pigeon) Perkins.

Gary loved meeting people, he had a great sense of humor and loved to smile at everyone.  Gary did not have children of his own, but he loved to make all his nieces and nephews laugh.  He loved puzzles and riding his bike.  He was the oldest brother of 10 siblings.

Gary is survived by two sisters Mary Ann Antoine of Peshawbestown, Debra Jean Perkins of Manistee; two brothers, William Ray Oskaboose of Scottville, Scott Anthony (Gail) Perkins of Traverse City; nine nieces, Denise Speer, Karen Oskaboose, Pamela Antoine, Heather Antoine, Dawn (Mike) Penman, Stacy Speer, Michelle Oskaboose, Nicole Perkins, Karrie Shostak; 12 nephews, Jeffory Speer, Douglas “Jon” Speer, Gregory Antoine, Richard Oskaboose, Daniel Irish, Mark Irish, Justin (Katie) Garn, David Shostak, Andrew Perkins, Anthony (Cassandra) Shostak, William (Gemini) Oskaboose, Joshua Perkins, John Oskaboose, and several great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Cheryl Lynn Oskaboose, Virginia Kathryn Speer, Delores Clara Oskaboose and Joni Lynn Jones; one brother Micheal Peter; four uncles, Joe Fisher, Calvin White Pigeon, Edward White Pigeon and Howard White Pigeon; one aunt, Virginia White Pigeon and his grandparents, William and Clara White Pigeon.

Private family services have been held in Riverside Cemetery, Hamilton.

Loretta M. Galla, Died October 10, 2018

MAPLE CITY - Loretta Mary Galla, 79, of Maple City, passed away on October 10, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.

Loretta was born September 5, 1939 on the family farm in Cleveland Township the daughter of Leo Frank Nemeskal and Mary Frances (Shalda) Nemeskal.  On Oct. 31, 1959 at St. Joseph’s Church she married Leon Francis Galla who survives.

Leon and Loretta for decades ran the family strawberry farm.  She loved playing euchre and polka dancing.  Loretta was an avid Detroit Tigers baseball fan and would admonish her husband if he tried to change the channel.  She also enjoyed soap operas and going to the Cedar Hilltoppers to play cards.   Loretta was a master canner canning pickles, sauerkraut and making polish sausage.

Loretta and Leon got to travel in their later years seeing Alaska, Hawaii, Branson Missouri, Las Vegas, China, Poland, Germany and several cruises.  She held a deep love for her family and adored her grandchildren.

Loretta is survived by her loving husband of fifty-eight years, Leon; her three sons, Gary (Trudy) Galla, Gregory (Tricia Kalchik) Galla, Mark (Debra) Galla; her sisters, Merita (Vince) Zywicki, Rita Winowiecki, and Marcella (Ron) Rice; and her grandchildren, Tesha (Andrew) Milliron, Shannon, Tayler, Sean, Chauntel, BriarRose, Michael, Max, Carson, and Kaylee, and great-grandchildren: A’nevaeh, Ava, Iva, and Nolan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Michael Allen Galla on Oct. 4, 2004 and her brothers Frank Nemeskal and Albert Nemeskal. 

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday October 12 at the Holy Rosary Church of Cedar with the Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.  The funeral mass will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 13 also at the church with the family greeting friends at 12 p.m.  Burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery will follow the service.  Father Donald Libby and Father Anthony Cureton will serve as co-celebrants.

TRAVERSE CITY - Randy Robert Day, 42, of Traverse City, passed away while kayaking on Sept. 24, 2018. 

Randy was born May 4, 1976 at Leelanau Memorial Hospital of Northport the son of Robert C. Day and Donna K. (Bailey) Day.

Randy was born with gasoline in his veins with a love for racing and ready with a helping hand to anyone in need.  He was born into racing, attending races when he was 6 months old, but sleeping through the race.  Randy would see the large driver’s numbers on the side of the cars and that started his fantastic mathematical skills.

He won his first checkered flag when he was 4 years old at a tricycle race at the Northern Michigan Speedway.  Randy started racing cars at 15 years old until present time.  He, his father Robert, his mother Donna and Uncle Doug supported him at thousands of races and the over 2000 checkered flags Randy and Robert won.

Randy spent 8 years in NASCAR All American Racing series, he also raced on local tracks in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.  He loved meeting people, he loved helping others.  He also had a passion for snowboarding and kayaking.

Randy, much to the dismay of his crew, would help other drivers with their car problems, even if they were racing against him.  He had parts in some Up North Zombie movies, most notably Thaw of the Dead.  Randy was active in getting the Indigenous People Day in Traverse City officially recognized.  

Randy is survived by his parents, Robert C. and Donna K. Day, his siblings, Christine (Larry) Tueller, Kristen Harthorn; his aunts and uncle, Karen Zimba, Sandy Turner, Doug Day, Lori Bailey and many loving extended family members.

A celebration of Randy’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 with the family greeting friends at 11 a.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.  Friends are encouraged to share their stories of our dearest Randy.

TRAVERSE CITY - Robby Walter Stern, 62, of Traverse City, passed away Monday, October 1, 2018 at home.



Robby was born May 12, 1956 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of Robert Sylvester Stern and Kathleen Mary (Moore) Stern.



Robby had a big heart and did what-ever he had to do for his family.  He was the “Robin Williams” of his family.  Very social, very funny and silly, Robby loved to make others laugh.  He was always tinkering with computers, he could take one out of the garbage and repair it to better than new.



Robby is survived by his children, Amber (Joshua) Stern-Phillips, Anastasia (David) Kolliker, Kathleen (James Flannery) Stern, Robert Stern; their mother Sidonia Eshleman-Stern; his siblings, Colleen Whetstone, Darlene Tolber, Rick Stern; his grandchildren, Victoria Stern, Nathan Phillips, Wesley and Cecilia Flannery; and many loving nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Pamela Cartwright.

NORTHPORT – Steiner Christopher Garthe Jr., “Chris”, 69, of Northport, passed away Friday, September 28, 2018, at Munson Medical Center.

Chris was born September 16, 1949 in Traverse City, the son of Steiner Sr. and Sigwalda (Nelson) Garthe.

Chris was raised on his family farm in Northport.  He always had a love of the natural world and was the last of the “Norwegian Bachelor Farmers”.

A natural teacher, Chris shared the knowledge he acquired from CMU, farming, reading and life, making anyone his student after talking with him.  He loved to teach people about nature and its importance in our lives.  He worked with many people in the county over the years, but most recently at the Leelanau Soil Conservation District, where he was a resource for many folks.

His vast wealth of knowledge extended beyond plants and trees; a very skilled fly fisherman, Chris created his own flies.  On his walks he continuously sought out feathers and furs that he could use to create the delicate works of art.

Chris was just plain fun to talk with.  With almost any topic, he would have something clever, witty or just a fun story that on...and on...and on...  He brought joy to many people, and always had a kind word to say.

Chris is survived by his siblings, Gene (Kathrine) Garthe, Gertrude “Trudy” Garthe, Carol Berendsohn, Bonnie (Keith) Shiner, and Sally Garthe; many loving nieces and nephews, as well as many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4 with Sharing of Memories at 7 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.  The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Bethany Lutheran Church of Northport.  Burial will follow in Leelanau Township Cemetery.  Pastor Ruth Overdier will officiate.
