Died December 15, 2016

NORTHPORT - Ruth Catherine Sleder-Craker, 96, of Northport, passed away Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016 at TenderCare of Leelanau surrounded by her loving family.

Ruth was born Oct. 22, 1920 in Leland the youngest of eight children to Richard George and Herminia “Minnie” Johanna (Muchow) Steffens.  On April 12, 1946 in Traverse City she married Andrew Sleder who preceded her in death on September 27, 1979.  On May 2, 1986 in East Leland she married Dwight “Vern” Craker who preceded her in death on March, 14, 2010.

She was a member of the Eastern Star and loved getting together with friends to play euchre.  Ruth was the consummate hostess and loved to throw parties and cook / host for gatherings of dozens of friends at time.  She could compute in her head all that it took to make meals for 30 people easily.  Her family remembers her two-foot-long jelly rolls with apple filling and her cakes.

Ruth and Andrew were accomplished dancers, especially the waltz.  They lit up the dance floor with their skills.  Ruth and Vern loved to travel the country together.  They would motor home on the roads, chili cooking on the stove and visit the country.

Ruth is survived by her children, D. James (Kathy) Firestone of Northport, Nancy Rogers-Kalchik of Omena, Thomas (Ruth Ann) Sleder of Lake Leelanau, Chris S. (Teresa) Sleder of Northport; and a step daughter, Carol (Richard) Everhart of Traverse City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Andrew Sleder and Vern Craker; a daughter, Merlene Y. Rothenberg; and her siblings, Willard, Raymond, Richard, Edna, Gladys, Charlotte, and Donald.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7 at Northport Covenant Church with the family greeting friends at 10 a.m.  A luncheon will follow the service at the church.  Private family burial in East Leland Cemetery will be held in the Spring.  Rev. Jerry Lange will officiate.

Memorials may be directed to Northport Covenant Church, P.O. Box 367, Northport, MI, 49670.
