NORTHPORT - Ruth
Catherine Sleder-Craker, 96, of Northport, passed away Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016
at TenderCare of Leelanau surrounded by her loving family.
Ruth was born Oct. 22, 1920 in Leland the
youngest of eight children to Richard George and Herminia “Minnie” Johanna (Muchow)
Steffens. On April 12, 1946 in Traverse
City she married Andrew Sleder who preceded her in death on September 27,
1979. On May 2, 1986 in East Leland she
married Dwight “Vern” Craker who preceded her in death on March, 14, 2010.
She was a member of the Eastern Star and
loved getting together with friends to play euchre. Ruth was the consummate hostess and loved to
throw parties and cook / host for gatherings of dozens of friends at time. She could compute in her head all that it
took to make meals for 30 people easily.
Her family remembers her two-foot-long jelly rolls with apple filling
and her cakes.
Ruth and Andrew were accomplished dancers,
especially the waltz. They lit up the
dance floor with their skills. Ruth and
Vern loved to travel the country together.
They would motor home on the roads, chili cooking on the stove and visit
the country.
Ruth is survived by her children, D. James
(Kathy) Firestone of Northport, Nancy Rogers-Kalchik of Omena, Thomas (Ruth
Ann) Sleder of Lake Leelanau, Chris S. (Teresa) Sleder of Northport; and a step
daughter, Carol (Richard) Everhart of Traverse City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husbands, Andrew Sleder and Vern Craker; a daughter, Merlene Y. Rothenberg; and
her siblings, Willard, Raymond, Richard, Edna, Gladys, Charlotte, and Donald.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on
Saturday, Jan. 7 at Northport Covenant Church with the family greeting friends
at 10 a.m. A luncheon will follow the
service at the church. Private family
burial in East Leland Cemetery will be held in the Spring. Rev. Jerry Lange will officiate.

ReplyDeleteSheila was working n saw the enterprise, and called me just now, to tell me of Ruth's passing. I was sooo shocked, and i loved her sooo much. She will be missed by all of her family, BUT her friends as well...i hadn't been able to get to see her, of late, but i wanted to, no car. I will sorely miss this wonderful, loving, and most amazing woman..Ruth, i loved u soo much and know you are now in God's care, and loving it..and no longer in pain, nor misery.
