NORTHPORT – George William Betker Jr., 94, of Northport passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Orchard Creek Supportive Care with his loving family at his side.
  George was born on Dec. 3, 1922 in Ferndale, MI, the son of George Betker Sr. and Hazel (Noblett) Betker.  On Aug. 24, 1944 in Alma, MI he married his loving wife of seventy-two years, Betty Louise (Thompson) Betker, who survives. 
  George grew up in Ferndale and attend Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.  He and Betty met at MSU and graduated in 1944.  George immediately entered the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant j.g.
  Following his Navy service, George and Betty relocated to Royal Oak, MI.  George spent the next 36 years working as a manufacturer's rep with the automotive industry.  George and Betty retired to Northport and Vero Beach, Florida in 1982.
  They spent 35 years enjoying the natural beauty and wonderful friends of both communities. George enjoyed golfing, fishing and spending time with his family.  He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and was affectionally known as "Grandpa" to each of his grand children's friends.
  The family thanks the Orchard Creek Supportive Care staff and Hospice of Michigan for their care and compassion.
  George is survived by his wife, Betty; a daughter, Carol Lee (Jeffrey) Smith, two grandchildren, Ryan and Heather (Nick Ostroski) Smith, great granddaughter, Nehv Ostroski, and his sister, Polly Nash.
  He was proceeded in death by his parents and brother, Ralph.
  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 11:00am at the Leland Community United Methodist Church.  Visitation will take place at 10:30 at the church.
  Memorials may be directed to the Leland Community United Methodist Church, 106 N 4th St, Leland, MI, 49654, and used for special projects.
