Marian R. Pollack Conaway
Died April 19, 2017
TRAVERSE CITY – Marian
Rosemond Pollack Conaway, 92, formerly of Traverse City, passed away Wednesday,
April 19, 2017 at TenderCare of Leelanau with her loving family at her side.
Marian was born Nov. 9, 1924 in Kasson
Township to parents Francis John Pollack and Geneva Loucks Pollack at the
family home on Pollack Corner in Leelanau County.
In 1948, she married John Edward
Conaway. They lived in Traverse City, where
together they owned and operated Conaway’s Bowling Alley. After the bowling alley closed, Marian
completed LPN training at Northwestern Michigan College pursuing a nursing
career. She held positions at Munson
Medical Center, Traverse City Osteopathic Hospital, and Grand Traverse Regional
Hospital.
Volunteering was an important part of her
life. Marian volunteered with the
National Cherry Festival, Doula Teen Parent Program, VASA, Grand Traverse
Lighthouse, and the Women’s Resource Center.
When not out and about serving one of these programs, she was often
found crocheting and knitting hats and blankets for those in need.
In addition to her career and volunteering,
Marian Conaway was an avid traveler. The
Trans-Siberian Railway and Orient Express took her on adventures including a
stay in a Siberian yurt and walks on the Great Wall of China. She toured Spain and bused through the
Bavarian countries. Marian’s last trip
was to England where she spent the Christmas holiday with family.
Marian is survived by her son, Jeremy
(Marlene Bevan) Conaway, her daughter, Penny (Glenn Garthe) Conaway;
granddaughters, Lisa (Tracy) Brookfield, Katharen (Duane Flaska) Ball;
grandsons, Jared (Edith) Conaway, Zachary O’Connor, Geoffrey (Chad Gifford)
Garthe; great grandsons, Charles and Sidney Brookfield; sisters, Kathryn Kik
and Ernestine Manker, and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband,
John Conaway and her granddaughter, Michelle Conaway.
Memorials may be directed to a charity of one’s
choice or volunteering your time. A
celebration of life will be held at a later date.
