TRAVERSE CITY – Marian Rosemond Pollack Conaway, 92, formerly of Traverse City, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at TenderCare of Leelanau with her loving family at her side.
Marian was born Nov. 9, 1924 in Kasson Township to parents Francis John Pollack and Geneva Loucks Pollack at the family home on Pollack Corner in Leelanau County.
In 1948, she married John Edward Conaway.  They lived in Traverse City, where together they owned and operated Conaway’s Bowling Alley.  After the bowling alley closed, Marian completed LPN training at Northwestern Michigan College pursuing a nursing career.  She held positions at Munson Medical Center, Traverse City Osteopathic Hospital, and Grand Traverse Regional Hospital.
Volunteering was an important part of her life.  Marian volunteered with the National Cherry Festival, Doula Teen Parent Program, VASA, Grand Traverse Lighthouse, and the Women’s Resource Center.  When not out and about serving one of these programs, she was often found crocheting and knitting hats and blankets for those in need.
In addition to her career and volunteering, Marian Conaway was an avid traveler.  The Trans-Siberian Railway and Orient Express took her on adventures including a stay in a Siberian yurt and walks on the Great Wall of China.  She toured Spain and bused through the Bavarian countries.  Marian’s last trip was to England where she spent the Christmas holiday with family.
Marian is survived by her son, Jeremy (Marlene Bevan) Conaway, her daughter, Penny (Glenn Garthe) Conaway; granddaughters, Lisa (Tracy) Brookfield, Katharen (Duane Flaska) Ball; grandsons, Jared (Edith) Conaway, Zachary O’Connor, Geoffrey (Chad Gifford) Garthe; great grandsons, Charles and Sidney Brookfield; sisters, Kathryn Kik and Ernestine Manker, and many loving nieces and nephews.
