Mac E. Tennant
Died April 22, 2019

SUTTONS BAY – Mac Edward Tennant, 90, of Suttons Bay, passed away Monday, April 22, 2019 at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City, Michigan.

Mac was born September 14, 1928 at home in Deerfield, Michigan.  He was the oldest son of Leland and Hulda (Traub) Tennant.  Mac married Marian Pennington of Ridgeway, November 7, 1953 at Tecumseh Presbyterian Church.  Marian preceded him in death February 3, 2017.

Mac graduated from Deerfield High School in 1946 and joined the US Army in November 1950.  He served in the 196th in Alaska during the Korean War attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class.  Living for a year in a tent did not deter Mac’s love for Alaska or the outdoors.  Following his discharge from service in October 1952, Mac returned to farming and worked at Tecumseh Products Co.  He retired from Tecumseh Products in 1990 after 44½ years.

As an avid reader, he always had a book near him and loved visiting the library.  Mac and Marian loved the outdoors so they took their family on many adventures.  They traveled extensively throughout the U.S. (49 of 50 states) and Canada (8 of 10 provinces) camping most of their trips.  Later in life, they visited Ireland, Scotland and England.

Mac was a lifelong member of Deerfield United Methodist Church.  He was a member of the Deerfield American Legion, a volunteer for Hospice of Lenawee County and a teaching mentor at Deerfield Public School.  After moving to Leelanau County, he became an active member of Keswick United Methodist Church.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the Munson Hospice staff: Leah, Kevin, Amy & Jill and the staff at Munson Hospice house staff for their wonderful care of our Dad and Grandpa.  Thank you!

Mac is survived by his children, Mark (Edith) Tennant of Lynden, WA, Barbara (Pat) Burguard of Northport, David (Jemma) Tennant of Milford, OH and Mary (David) Hovest of Lake Leelanau; his grandchildren, Brynna (Renato) Marimon, Erin (Corey) Jenison, Dylan Burguard, Rita (Thomas) Schneider and Rachel (Jordan) Harmelink; step grandchildren, Tracie (Jeff) Causey and Jamie Nimmo; a brother, John (Shirley) Tennant; five great grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren.

Interment of Mac and Marian will be Tuesday, June 25, 1 p.m. at Deerfield Township Cemetery, Deerfield, Michigan. The memorial service will be Friday, June 28, 11 a.m. at Keswick United Methodist Church in Suttons Bay with visitation at 10 a.m.. Mac's son, Pastor David Tennant, and Pastor Patti Haas will officiate.

Memorials may be directed to Deerfield Public Library, c/o Lenawee District Library, 4459 West US 223, Adrian, MI 49221 and/or Keswick United Methodist Church, 3376 S. Center Hwy, Suttons Bay, MI 49682.

  1. I contacted the librarian in Deerfield, and she is requesting a change to the address:

"We greatly appreciate Mr. Tennant's thinking of the Deerfield Library this way in his final wishes, and I would like to convey my sympathy and kind thoughts to his family."

  2. Dear Mark and the rest of the gang,
Our prayers and sympathy for the loss of your dad, grandfather and G-grandfather. Your Dad (and Mom) both were the sweetest, kindest people ever. Loosing my Mom 11/30/17 at 92 years old was hard(our last parent like you all) but also a celebration of a long GOOD life. So as you say farewell to your Dad...remember what a GOOD guy he was and all the fun times. He is in a great place, with his lovely wife again and able to do the things they loved to do. No more tired bodies. God bless you all! Connie and John Seiser
