Nessa Lumsden Laing
Died March 30, 2019

TRAVERSE CITY – Nessa Lumsden Laing, 92, passed away on March 30, 2019 at Medilodge of Leelanau.

Nessa was born on Jan. 7, 1927 in Royal Oak, the daughter of Alexander and Margaret
(Paisley) Lumsden. On April 23, 1949, also in Royal Oak, she married Edsel Chapman
Laing who preceded her in death on May 5, 2016.

Nessa obtained a BA in Home Economics from Michigan State University, married Ed
and quickly put her education to use managing a household of three sons, a husband,
various dogs, cats and horses over the next 25 years. Nessa and Ed were do-it-yourselfers, believing that almost no project around the home required outside help, thus teaching their sons to be self-sufficient.

An avid golfer and all-around athlete, Nessa won women’s golf championships at Plum
Hollow Golf Club and Crystal Downs Country Club multiple times over the years.  A
knitter, quilter, and crafter she made, by hand, countless sweaters and quilts for her
sons and their families.

Nessa was a tireless advocate for her family and hosted many family reunions and
holiday parties doing much of the work herself.  She will be remembered as a strong,
independent, loving mother, wife, grandmother and great grandmother and a woman of
faith.

Nessa is survived by her sons, Stuart (Sharon), Scot (Rose), and Alan Laing;
grandchildren, Michael (Kristen) and Peter Laing; and great-grandsons, Everett and
Carson Laing.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Edsel; granddaughter,
Grace McNeil; sisters, May (Jim) Richardson, Dorothy (Jack) Doyle, and Jean (Jim)
Valrance.

Per Nessa’s wishes, cremation has taken place and private family services have been
held.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, 921 W. 11th Street, Suite 1W
Traverse City, MI 49684
