CEDAR – Germaine Marie Garvin, 89, of Cedar, passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019 at Maple Valley Nursing Home.


Germaine was born Dec. 5, 1929 in Cedar the daughter of Joseph and Selma (Schopieray) Kabat. On June 24, 1950 at the Holy Rosary Parish of Isadore, she married Edward Leo Garvin, who preceded her in death on May 8, 2008.

She was a true daughter of Leelanau County; born, married, raised a family, worked the family dairy and cherry farm and their rental cottages and worshipped in the county. After high school Germaine worked as nurse. She also spent many decades helping on the family dairy farm and cherry orchards.

In 1968 Ed and Germaine built Garvin Cottages on the waters of Lake Leelanau and she spent countless hours cleaning and maintaining them until she retired on July 7, 2019. Germaine only retired due to becoming ill.

She loved to house and room paint, Germaine learned from a professional painter. She painted the rooms in her house and their rental cottages. Germaine also loved to garden and use the riding lawn mower. She enjoyed dancing the polka, a good game of bingo, working church chicken dinners until 2018 and playing games and sledding with her grandchildren.

Germaine was life-long member of Holy Rosary Church and their Rosary Society. She was a lady whose character was built on faith, family, self sufficiency and putting the considerations of others before herself. 

Germaine is survived by her three children, Maralene (William) Roush, Kathleen (Gary) Seniw, Denis (Joan) Garvin; a sister, Rosemary (Mel) Varney; sister in law, Becky Kabat; seven grandchildren, Nicholas (Juliann) Roush, Dusti Roush, Kellie (Dan) South, Kevin (Beth) Seniw, Jennifer Seniw, Mindy Garvin and Brent (Brittany) Garvin; and seven great grandchildren, Mila South, twins Hazen and Ellie, Max Seniw, Sydnee and Peiper Hoesktra, and Brayden Garvin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her parents; and seven brothers, Theodore, Edmond, Leo, Frank, Jerome, Anthony, and Bernard; and a sister, Bernadine Galla.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 on Thursday, Aug. 29 at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. 

Visitation will re-locate and be held on Friday Aug. 30 at the Holy Rosary Church in Cedar from 5 p.m. to the start of the 7 p.m. Rosary. 

The mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug 31 with the family greeting friends at 10 a.m., also at the church. Burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery will follow. Father Donald Libby will serve as celebrant.
