Richard H. Hoover
Died December 21, 2019
NORTHPORT – Richard “Rich” H. Hoover, 71, of Northport, passed away, Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Rich was born April 3, 1948 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Richard and Elaine (Howard) Hoover.  On May 21, 1971 in Kirkwood, Missouri he married the love of his life Elizabeth (Frankel) Hoover.

Rich graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1971.  He proudly spent his entire career with Dow Corning Corporation in Midland, MI, holding a variety of jobs over 31 years including sales, marketing and administration.  The work allowed him to live in Midland, New Jersey, Miami, Mexico City and Tokyo where he was corporate Senior Vice President and President for the Asian area.

Beth and Rich retired to the Northport area in 2002 to their home on Lake Michigan. Rich enjoyed traveling, cooking, the art of Bonsai, and following the Kansas Jayhawks basketball team.  Rich served for years on the board of the Leelanau Conservancy, working to preserve the region he loved so much.

Family, friends and colleagues remember him as a sincere, loving, and patient man with a dry sense of humor.  Rich was strong-willed, enjoyed tackling challenges, and welcomed new adventures.  He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, great uncle, friend, and respected mentor.

Rich is survived by his wife of 48 years, Beth; a son, Richard (Akiko Yada) Hoover, a daughter, Ginger (Brian) Ebert; his granddaughters, Maya and Emmi Hoover and Elianne Ebert; his grandsons, Max and Spencer Ebert; two sisters, Leslie Hoover and Alicia (Roger) Rieder; cherished nieces and nephews; cousins, and dear friends all over the world.

  1. Sincere condolences to Beth and family from the students and faculty of KU. Rich was a wonderful man and our students enjoyed visiting with him on his trips to Lawrence. May the family experience peace in remembering Rich warmly. Rock Chalk!

I have only known Rich for a few years as I am a newer board member at the Conservancy. However his warm welcome, sound guidance and wonderful sense of humor has been a bright spot during my time there. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Rich. I'm sending my deepest condolences to Beth and the rest of Rich's family for their loss; and will be celebrating his positive impact on our community for years to come.

I've only had the pleasure of knowing Rich for a few years as I am a newer member of the Leelanau Conservancy board. His warm welcome, wise insight and wonderful sense of humor have been a bright spot of my time with the organization. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Rich on projects to conserve our mutually beloved Leelanau. Beth, I'm sending my deepest condolences to you and the rest of your family, and will continue to celebrate his positive impacts on our community for years to come. We are all better for knowing Rich and I hope to follow his example. xoxo

  4. As "downstaters" who joined the Leelanau Conservancy several years ago after many years visiting family in Traverse City and enjoying all that the Leelanau Peninsula offers us all, we extend our thanks to Mr. Hoover and all he did to continue the good work of this Conservancy.
