William J. Irwin III
Died Sept. 15, 2017

CEDAR – William Joseph Irwin III, of Cedar, passed away Friday, Sept. 15, 2017 at Spectrum Health, Grand Rapids.
Bill was born on Dec. 3, 1948 in Detroit, the son of William Joseph and Louise Stevens (Woods) Irwin.
After completing his Bachelor of Science in Economics at University of Detroit, Bill had an array of interests and hobbies including being a member of Knights of Columbus, Prospector’s Club, Past President of the Little Traverse Lake Association, and was on the Board of Directors for General Credit Union . Bill loved to talk, and talk, and talk, which is fitting because he built his career in Telecom.  Afterwards, Bill didn’t really retire- instead, together with his children, Bill ran Irwin Construction Company building homes in Leelanau County.  He adored his daughter and three sons and inspired them with his love of travel, showing them around the US, Europe, Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean.  Many of his travels also included sailing, a passion in his life.
Bill never knew a stranger and could remember the smallest details and stories of people.  His outgoing nature could be seen in his smile and in the twinkle of his eye.  Bill was a dreamer who lived only in the now and for the future.
Bill is survived by his children, Michelle, William IV, Ryan, and Shawn Irwin; grandchildren, William V and Conor Irwin; sisters, Mary Lou Landry, Margaret Bullington, and Catherine Irwin; and brother, Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dorothy Irwin.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. with the rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. at Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 22 at 11 a.m. with family greeting friends one hour prior at St. Mary of the Assumption, Lake Leelanau.  Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery. Fr. Bryan Medlin will serve as celebrant.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Leelanau Children’s Center, care of Bill Irwin P.O. Box 317, Leland, MI 49654.

Bill was my good buddy since grade school. I still remember his phone number Ve-79023. He joined us last September for a golfing weekend near Alpena Michigan. He didn't golf but he did hang out pretty well with the guys. Bill was a great friend who I will really miss. Condolences to all the Family. God Bless you Bill. Rest in peace.
