Died August 12, 2014
LAKE LEELANAU – Leonard Joseph Morio, 90, of Lake Leelanau, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014 at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by his family.
Leonard was born on May 14, 1924, in Bingham
Township, the son of Peter and Anastasia (Sharnowski) Morio. On Aug. 23, 1952 at St. Michael’s Church in
Suttons Bay, he married Teresa L. Walter, who survives.
Leonard
had a passion for his family, faith, and the great outdoors. He was a loving and caring family man,
devoted Catholic, member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Mary’s
Parish for 90 years. He was an avid
sportsman. Len loved to hunt and
fish. He hunted ducks for 78 years in a
row in his own duck blind. His hobby was
collecting duck decoys and carving decoys.
Leonard
was a cherry farmer and a commercial sign painter. He was a great story teller and could strike
up a conversation with anyone.
In
addition to his wife of almost 62 years, Leonard is survived by his children,
Jean (Gregory) Moe, Denny (Kathy) Morio, Tom (Cheri) Morio, Becky (Bill)
Sterrett, and Penny (Scott) Emeott; 13 grandchildren, and 10
great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Morio; and two sisters, Marie
Plamondon and Gertrude Coyne.
Visitation
will be held on Friday, Aug. 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at
8 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Lake Leelanau.
The funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Aug 16 at 9 a.m. also at
the church. Burial will follow at St.
Mary’s Cemetery. Fr. Michael Janowski will serve as celebrant.
Memorials
may be directed to St. Mary School, P.O. Box 340, Lake Leelanau, MI 49653
and/or to Mass Intentions.
Arrangements
are with the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
To Theresa Morio, I will always cherish those chance times that I got to sit with Len on a Meijer bench and reminisce about his friendship he shared with my dad, Wally Belanger, when they were neighbors. He always was so cheerful and full of optimism that would spark my day at Meijer with delight! What a chorus of angels singing await his arrival in Heaven! I will not be able to be at his service, but, I will sit at our Meijer bench on Saturday with reverence in knowing that he joins many other devout Catholics from Lake Leelanau in Heaven.
