Doris M. Eastin
Died Sep. 17, 2016
TRAVERSE
CITY - Doris Marion Eastin, 91, passed away Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the
Munson Hospice House.
Doris was born December 23, 1924, in St.
Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of Nels Johan (John) Nylander and Elsie (Swanson)
Nylander. She attended the University of
Minnesota before moving to California where she graduated in 1948 from UC
Berkeley with a BA in Social Work. In
the early 1960s, she earned a Masters degree in Library Science at Catholic
University in Washington DC.
All her
life, Doris was an avid reader, devouring books like bonbons. She loved classical music, especially opera,
and in her later years she developed a deep fascination with Russian baritone
Dmitri Hvorostovsky. In 2013 she
attended one of his concerts at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and was
invited to meet him back stage. An
autographed photo of Dmitri was one of her treasures.
History and culture were important to her. The New York Times was always within arm's
reach and she was well-informed on current events and held firm opinions on
everything from politics and personalities to world events and fashion. Mostly she expressed those opinions only in
close company and an adorably wrinkled nose might be the only clue of
disapproval.
Travel was a passion. With her first husband, Donald R. Bergstrom, a
Foreign Service officer, and their two children, Diane and Karen, she traveled
the world, living in Paris, Saigon, Uganda, and Thailand. After that marriage ended in divorce in the
early 1970s, Doris married Dr. Roy B Eastin, a Professor of Business Management
at George Washington University in Washington DC. Roy shared her love of adventure and together
they took many cruises and lived life to the fullest.
When Doris was widowed in 2006, she moved to
the Cincinnati area to be close to her daughter Diane and son-in-law Bert. In 2015, she moved to Traverse City and became
a charter member of the Cordia Senior Living at Grand Traverse Commons. She had the time of her life at Cordia, loved
her room with the big arched window, the meals she compared to those she would
have on a luxury liner, and most of all the wonderful friendships she developed
with the residents and staff. All who
met her there will remember how much she appreciated them and that huge,
radiant smile that would light the darkest corner of any room.
Doris is survived by her beloved two
daughters, Diane (Bert) Thomas of Northport, Karen (Barry) Kemelhor of
Rockville, MD, and a beloved stepdaughter, Ginger (Morris) Levin of Lighthouse
Point, FL, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy
B. Eastin, and brother, John Nylander.
Private family services will be held at a
later date in Washington DC.
In remembrance of Doris, donations may be
made to the Cordia Employees Fund, 600 Cottageview Drive, Traverse City, MI.
