TRAVERSE CITY – John Perry Motlow, 77, passed away Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016 at Orchard Creek Supportive Care surrounded by his family.


John was born July 16, 1939 in Birmingham, AL, the son of John Franklin Motlow and Garnet Ferrell (Evans) Motlow.  He was raised in Birmingham, AL and Palmetto, FL.  He was in the United States Coast Guard as a radioman from 1958-1962.  He received a BS from Univ. of South Florida and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the Univ. of Kentucky.  He married Lyn Russell Motlow in 1966.  They raised their children in Baton Rouge, LA where he worked at and retired from Exxon Chemical after 25 years. 


He enjoyed cycling and sailing in his retirement and was an enthusiastic playmate to his five grandchildren.


John is survived by his two children, Ferrell and Eliot Motlow; five grandchildren; and his former spouse, Lyn Motlow.


Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life has been held.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Michigan, 10850 E. Traverse Highway, Traverse City, MI, 49686 and/or a Charity of One’s Choice.

    Condolences to the family. I enjoyed many years working with John at the Chem Plant Lab. He alway had a warm smile and positive thoughts.
