David W. McKisson, Died August 27, 2018

David W. “Mac” McKisson
Died August 27, 2018

NORTHPORT—David West McKisson, 63, of Northport, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018 at his home in Northport, surrounded by his loving family.

David was born July 7, 1955 in Findlay, Ohio, the son of John and Sarah (Sutherland) McKisson.  On July 3, 1982 in Leland, he married Susan (Epting) McKisson who survives.

Growing up, David spent his summers in Leland at his family’s cottage and decided to move north when he could.  He was finally able to in 1979 when he opened a print shop in Traverse City.  His love and passion for this area was unparalleled.
David was a man with a true zest for life and a disregard for the status quo.  He had a great love of people – known as Mackie to all.  He had a unique, twisted sense of humor that he shared with everyone.  He cared greatly about being genuine; he was a straight shooter who told it how it was.  He felt that integrity was important, and no matter how he was perceived by others, he had to be true to himself.

David loved his golf, where he was known as a fierce competitor and a two-time Club Champion at the Leland Country Club.  He also had a great affinity for the outdoors, hunting and travelling everywhere with his German Shorthairs.
David is survived by his wife, Susan (Epting) McKisson; his children, Shannon McKisson, Sally (Eric) Andrews, Daniel (Marina) McKisson and Jason McKisson; and his siblings, Camilla (Hunter) Marvel, Jack (Peggy) McKisson, Ryan (Mary) McKisson, Bill (Anne) McKisson, Mary (Bob) Brown, Sarah McKisson and Susie (Steve) Savoie.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of David’s life was held on Sat. Sept. 1, 2018 at the Leland Lodge.

Condolences may be shared with David’s family below or on our funeral home Facebook Page.

Louis Joseph Duperon Jr.
Died August 17, 2018

BARTON CITY – Louis Joseph Duperon Jr., 70, of Alcona County, passed away Friday, August 17, 2018 at St. Mary’s of Michigan Hospital in Saginaw.
Louis was born March 2, 1948 in Detroit, the son of Louis Joseph Duperon Sr. and Margaret (Bisesi) Duperon.
Louis was a United States Army Veteran with a heart of gold.  He told his family “I always give to the people, the people that need”, but it wasn’t until he passed that they truly understood the extent of his generosity.  Louis had receipts upon receipts of donations he made to churches, soup kitchens, schools, Right to Life, and anything he felt was a worthy cause.
The outdoors were very important to Louis.  Whenever he was in the city, he couldn’t wait to leave and return to nature.  He loved to fish in Leelanau County with his friend Willard Belanger, and to come back with what they caught ready for his cousin, Mary Lou Mikowski to fry up. He also enjoyed hunting; he would hunt with his nephews and his brother in-law whenever he could.
His life was centered around his faith, and sharing his love and kindness with others was as easy as breathing for him.  Louis loved his family – visiting as often as he could and calling when he could not.
Louis is survived by his daughter, Heidi (Shaun Sharpe) Troutt; his sisters, Judy (John) Bolla and Debbie (Gordon) Flaim; his aunt, Geniveve Gauthier; his grandson, Mikel (Paige Akers) Troutt; and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24 with the Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25 at St. Mary’s Church, Lake Leelanau, with the family greeting friends at 10 a.m.  Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Fr. Bryan Medlin will serve as celebrant.
Memorial donations may be directed to St. Mary’s Church, PO Box 340, Lake Leelanau, MI 49653 and/or to the All Saints Catholic Parish, 817 Sable St, Alpena, MI 49707.

Joseph Matthew Korson
Died August 15, 2018

LAKE LEELANAU – Joseph Matthew Korson , 73, of Lake Leelanau, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, in the home he built with his son Chuck and good friend, Art McNeil.

Joseph was born September 21, 1944 in Omena, the son of Arthur Joseph Korson and Mollie Christina (Houdek) Korson.  After 18 years of being together, he married Belinda “Grandma Lin” Diane Baker on August 8, 2018 at their home in Lake Leelanau.

Joseph was a hardworking, strong willed Bohemian, with a great love of the outdoors and telling stories.  Nobody was a stranger to Joseph -- to him, everyone looked familiar. Perhaps, it was due to his strong connections to the community.  He was the farm manager at Ed and Barb Merica’s Farm.  Joe attended St. Mary’s Church and for over three decades; he was the basketball coach and referee at St. Mary’s, a little league umpire, and the host of many euchre tournaments.

Joseph was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting.  He took hunting trips to a deer camp in the U. P., as well as to Colorado and to Quebec with his son and friends.  Joe couldn’t wait to take his 9-month-old granddaughter on her first hunting trip.  But even on these trips, he never put aside his devotion to his faith; he would find a church to attend mass.  His love of the Lord showed in everything he did.  Joe was a generous soul that was always there to help those in need, whether it be by helping with bills, groceries, or chopping wood for the winter.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Belinda Korson; his children, Janell (Ted Corwin) Goodwin-Korson, Charles (Beverly) Korson, Carla (Mark) Hibbard, and Ken Knight; his siblings, Dolores Houdek, Blaise (Sarah) Korson, Dorothy Korson, Albert (Sue) Korson, Mary (Ray) Feagles, Vicky (Al) Hinds, Art (Joyce) Korson, Delphine (Jack) Zugel; a friend that was like a son, Chuck (Sandy) Wolfe, his dear friend, Butch (Laurel) Couturier; and his grandchildren, Alexandria Goodwin, Melinda and Mark Hubbard, and Tulena and Cassidy Knight.

He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers, Jimmy, Willard and Ray, his sisters, Barb and Loretta; and a daughter in infancy, Annie.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22 with the Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.  The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23 at St. Mary’s Church, Lake Leelanau with the family greeting friends at 10 a.m.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Korson Family, P.O. Box 159, Suttons Bay, MI 49682.

John E. Walheim, Died August 3, 2018

John E. Walheim
Died Aug. 3, 2018

SUTTONS BAY - John Eugene Walheim, 91, passed away on August 3, 2018, peacefully at home in Suttons Bay, Michigan. He was born on May 12, 1927 in Leechburg, Pennsylvania to the late John I. Walheim and Bessie G. Walheim (Hill). He was one of three children and spent the majority of his life in his beloved Pennsylvania.

In many ways, John lived the American dream, enlisting to serve his country at the age of 17 in 1945 as a radio operator in the United States Coast Guard. Upon his return, John used the benefits of his GI Bill to earn his Associates degree from York Junior College and his BA from Gettysburg College. He then worked full-time and put himself through night school to earn his law degree from Temple University.

In 1947, he met a young art student who was to be his future wife, Camille (Evarian). Together, they had many adventures, including “road rallies” in their favorite cars and traveling along the east coast. They had three children together. They divorced in 1969 and he remarried Janet Sussman in 1972.

John built his law practice in Philadelphia - his life as a Philly lawyer came with many colorful stories and characters, often joking that his life was a combination of Mad Men, American Hustle and Casino. His specialty was eminent domain law.

In 2002, he moved to Suttons Bay to be closer to family. He developed a love for card-playing, especially Texas Hold Em’ poker, and it was at the card table where he received the nickname “Gator” from opponents. He penned two books on poker and blackjack as part of his “Gator’s Guide” series.

John loved photography, keeping up with new tech, and jazz music. He was also incredibly passionate about keeping up with current events, with MSNBC playing at almost every hour of the day. He was progressive in his views and was hoping above all else to make it to the voting booth this November - he would encourage all to exercise their right to vote in his absence.

John is survived by his three children, Matthew Walheim of Suttons Bay, Erica Szilagyi-Norgart (Mitchell) of Naples, Florida, and Lisa Walheim-Seymour (Ronald) of Acme, Michigan, along with his eight grandchildren: Katrina, Natalie, John, Chloe, Jack, Julia, Millie and Trixie. He is also survived by his sister, Jeanne Hamm, 97, of Radium Springs, New Mexico.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s name to the ACLU of Michigan, 2966 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48201.
