Joshua P. Feickert Died August 31, 2020

Joshua P. Feickert

Died August 31, 2020

SUTTONS BAY – Joshua Paul Feickert, 31, of Suttons Bay, passed away August 31, 2020 in Traverse City. Joshua was born July 23, 1989 in Chesapeake, Virginia, the son of Paul and Jennifer (Heldt) Feickert.

Joshua grew up in a Coast Guard family and lived in Grandy, North Carolina; St. Ignace, Michigan; Tuscarawas and Madison, Ohio; Port Hope, Michigan; and Suttons Bay. At each of these communities Joshua became an integral part of the town. In his youth he joined the Boy Scouts and would visit his dad at the station. There he learned to properly retire and fold the flag for the night. His patriotism was inherent as well as his urge to help others without fanfare.

He graduated Suttons Bay High School with the Class of 2007. He was a member of the 2007 Norsemen Football team that did not allow a single conference opponent to score and went deep into the playoffs; he also played basketball and golf; loved baseball and he played everywhere he lived. He was a valued member of the SB and American Legion teams. In one of his first Varsity starts, he pitched a no-hitter.

In school he was a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters and a member of People to People Student Ambassadors Program. With People to People Joshua was selected to tour Europe seeing such countries as Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and France. Joshua represented Suttons Bay and our nation on these trips.

After high school Joshua attended Trine University in Indiana. He then earned an associate degree from NMC and later his bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University.

Joshua quietly helped folks in need with no attention or publicity wanted. Whether paying for a stranger’s meal, a cup of coffee, buying a meal for a mother with kids and a deployed husband ~ Josh would do the right thing and help.

He had the outdoors in his blood; Josh loved fishing, hiking, shooting, camping, and working outdoors. As a youth he learned bee keeping from Julius Kolarik. Joshua also learned to work in the area vineyards, making cheese from Leelanau Cheese and most recently became heavy equipment certified while working in fruit processing. He never shied away from work if it was not in a suit and tie and in an office. Joshua also spent many years as a cook in a local restaurant where he met and made many friends in his community.

Joshua is survived by his parents, Paul and Jennifer; a grandmother, Kathryn Heldt; many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Julie B. Glidden Died September 9, 2020

Julie B. Glidden

1971 ~ 2020

Julie Beatrice Glidden, 49, of Northport, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at Munson Medical Center.

Julie was born April 18, 1971 the daughter of Norman and Mary Jo (Carr) Walter.  On June 22, 1996 at the Norm and Pauline Nielsen Farm she married Tracy S. Glidden.

Julie attended Flint Central Highschool and graduated from Swartz Creek High School.  She attended the University of Michigan, Flint.  She earned a master’s degree in Art and spent a career teaching.  Julie taught at Byron Area Schools where she molded many generations of students.  A special project was to have her students design and paint individual bricks in the art room.  Over 900 students painted / decorated these bricks over her teaching years.

She was known as a kamikaze artist - Julie did not sketch nor plan her work.  She would listen to your vision of the artwork and then jump right into and before you knew it; your vision was a reality from her skilled hands.  She loved music and had an encyclopedic knowledge of all kinds of music.  No matter what type of music was playing, Julie could either sing it, would know the band, or know a trivia fact about the artist.

Julie loved to create art and could also play the piano and cello.  She loved color and the color scheme of her Up North house reflects that love with a rainbow potpourri decorating her house.  She loved gardening and knew how to attract all the butterflies.

When Julie was in a room, you knew it; her inner light lit up a room with her personality.  She had an unforgettable laugh and could put a smile on anyone’s face.

Julie is survived by her husband of 24 years, Tracy; her parents, Norman and Mary Jo Walter; her children, Davin and Valerie Glidden; two siblings, Jennifer (Steve) Paciorka and Norman (Jessica) Walter; nephew, Ivan; and nieces, Ingrid and Alice.

Private family services have been held.

John J. Konkal Jr. Died August 22 ,2020

John J. Konkal Jr.

Died Aug. 22, 2020

CEDAR – John Joseph Konkal Jr., 91, of Cedar, passed away Saturday, Aug. 22, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family.

John was born March 12, 1929 in Detroit; the son of John Sr. and Agnes Konkal.  He grew up in Hamtramck, attended Ford trade school and later went on to graduate from the University of Detroit with a degree in engineering.  He spent his professional career as an Industrial Engineer Executive working for many machine industries in the Detroit area.  He was also a part of the Civil Air Patrol Reserves.

On May 5, 1951 at St. Thomas Church of Detroit he married L. Laura (Jagosz) Konkal who preceded him in death on March 20, 2019.  John and Laura met in their teens and became high school sweethearts; they even grew up on the same street.  They were inseparable.  Fully devoted to each other, sharing their love of God and faith.  After living in Roseville, Michigan they moved to Bloomfield Hills in 1964, where they raised their six children. John and Laura then retired up to Cedar, Michigan in 1995 to enjoy many happy years in their forever home.

John was an usher at St.Mary’s and a very involved 20 year member of the Knights of Columbus.  He loved watching Tigers games with Laura, and they were a hit on the dance floor doing the Polka; so swift and perfect.

He was a loving and exceptional father that would do anything for his family.  John was a truly kind man; he never used a curse word.  On a typical day you would find John enjoying the lake view and bird watching.  He loved taking pictures and had a camera with him at all times to capture memories.  John had a special interest in cars, working on them, reading about them, and especially driving his prized 1967 Corvair that he restored himself.  He was the king of maps and was always ready to pull one out and get you where you were going. John was a builder, designer, and handyman; if it needed fixing he was your guy.  He even had a registered patent in his name.  He adored babies! Some would call him a baby whisperer, they were always content in his arms.  He’d let the kids mess up his Old Spice hair, laugh together, then comb it back into place just to have them do it all over again.

John is survived by his six children, Christine (Gary) Wobrock, Robert Konkal, Susan (Michael) Oldham, John P. Konkal, Carol (John) Rakowicz, and Paul (Jennifer) Konkal; a sister, Barbara Zaccagni; sisters in law, Betty Konkal, Doris Jagosz, and Kathy Jagosz; sixteen grandchildren, Adam, Ryan, Karl, Amanda, Brad, Ted, David, Lauren, Max, Katie, Hayden, Tyler, Sarah, Leah, Sophie, Ben and eleven great grandchildren.

James J. Von Holt Died September 8, 2020

James J. Von Holt

1952 - 2020

OMENA – James John Von Holt, 68, died peacefully from natural causes on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 doing what he loved, working on his cherry farm.  His love for his land was only surpassed by the love for his family.

Jim was born February 2, 1952, the son of Ronald and Dorothy (Witkop) Von Holt who predeceased him.  On August 23, 2003 in Northport, he married Eugenie Scott Von Holt, who survives.

Jim was a fourth generation Von Holt to run the family farm.  Many in the region and beyond considered Jim to be the best cherry farmer in the area.  He was keenly aware of his obligation to stand proudly on the shoulders of those who preceded him.  And, just as importantly, to perpetuate that progression together with his wife Eugenie and nephew Wyatt.  Since his earliest years, driving his John Deere pedal tractor, Jim sensed his connection to the land.

He took great pride in his farm.  Jim challenged himself to bring out the best in the land.  That is why the farm was always meticulously groomed, with rarely a weed to be found.  He loved to work the land, particularly getting a field ready for a new planting.  Jim was a strong supporter of the farming community.  He was consistently rooting for small farmers and particularly young farmers.  He was always available when someone had a question saying, “I’m not sure if it is the right way but this is what I do.  If you are going to grow something, grow it the best you can.”  In the past few years Jim worked with his daughter, Sonja, who is in the Ag business.  They were able to teach each other things about farming and create a friendship beyond a father/daughter.

Jim graduated in 1970, the last class to graduate from the old brick Northport Public School.  There Jim made many life-long friends and enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada with them and playing Friday morning poker.  His larger than life presence touched all who he met.  He was loved and respected by many.

Jim and Eugenie loved their Corvette rides around the county.  They enjoyed their travels including honeymooning in Istanbul, Turkey; catching a 300lb yellow fin tuna on a 24ft ponga in Mexico; driving adventures to the Southwest National Parks; exploring Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks; shrimping and fishing in the Charleston SC tidal basins; exploring the Hawaiian Islands in a Jeep; ziplining in Costa Rica; searching for redbud and dogwood in bloom in the Smokey Mountains; and collecting artwork during their travels.

Jim enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s sporting, drama, and robotics events.  He was surprised how much he enjoyed 8-man football following the team even after his grandson had graduated.  He was very proud of all his grandkids and their accomplishments.

Jim was a curious and interested man, whose thirst for knowledge fed his love of history, particularly family history.  He found peace out on Bass Lake fishing from the same land that his great-grandfather first settled when he came to Leelanau County.

Along with his wife, Jim is survived by his children, Sonja (Todd) Morton, Jaime (Dan) Bardenhagen; his grandchildren, Stephanie and Zachary Morton, Daniel and Justin Bardenhagen; his sister, Sandra (Doug) McCoy; his nephew, Wyatt (Stephanie Fineout) McCoy; and great-nephew, Dougie; and great-niece, Kylie.

Per Jim’s request there is no funeral.

If you would like to remember Jim, memorials may be directed to Suttons Bay Robotics c/o Suttons Bay Schools ,PO Box 367, Suttons Bay, MI 49682 and/or to the Leelanau Township Community Foundation, PO Box 818, Northport, MI 49670 and/or to the Northport Sportsmen’s Club at PO Box 373, Northport, MI 49670.

Lawrence J. Noling Died September 7, 2020

Lawrence J. Noling

1930 ~ 2020

Lawrence J. Noling, 89, of Leland, MI, and Indianapolis, IN, passed peacefully in his sleep on Monday, September 7, 2020 at his longtime family home in Leland, just weeks before he would have celebrated his 90th birthday.

Larry was born on September 26, 1930 in Indianapolis, IN, the son of Alfred Wells and Jean Luther Noling. He grew up in Golden Hill, attending Indianapolis public school #60, Park School, and Shortridge High School, where he met his first wife Monica Lennox.  During his school days, he was active in scouting, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.  He was also a proud member of the honor society.

It was during those early years that his parents first brought him, along with his sister Kathy, to vacation in Northern Michigan, renting a house on Lake Leelanau for the first time.  After several years, the family purchased their own lakefront property, and began a love affair with Leland Michigan that now spans five generations of his family.

Larry earned a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, graduating magna cum laude in 1952. While there, he was a Phi Beta Kappa, captain of the sailing team, and business manager of the campus newspaper.

He served his country during the Korean conflict as a Staff Sergeant for three years, before returning to Indianapolis to work alongside his father at Hurty Peck & Co.  He remained there for the rest of his career, overseeing its evolution from a small local business into a thriving multinational company, Universal Group, Ltd.  He served as both chairman and CEO before his retirement in 1986.

He met his second wife, Molly Young, there and enjoyed 45 happy years with her until her death in 2012.

Other affiliations from his time in Indianapolis include Woodstock Club, Players Club, Skyline Club, and the Indianapolis Civic Theatre, where he was on the board of directors.  He also served on the boards of numerous corporate entities.

Upon retirement, he split his time between Indianapolis, Leland, and Sanibel Island in Florida, before moving to Michigan full time. He was a former president and longtime member of both the Leland Country Club and the Leland Yacht Club.  He also sat on the boards of both the Leland Community Library and Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear.

He was a talented bridge player, an avid reader (on a first name basis with all the librarians in town), and a family man, always up for a picnic at the beach, cookouts on the back lawn overlooking the lake, card games on the porch, and endless trips around the lake, hauling the squealing grandchildren behind the boat.

Larry loved to travel and delighted in sharing those experiences with family members and friends. He also loved to sing, and his steady baritone will be sorely missed at the Leland Community Sunday Night Sings.

When in Leland, he could often be found on the golf course.  When asked how he wished to be remembered, he said, “after forty years, he finally got his golf score under 100.”

In a more serious vein, Larry emphasized his commitment to and joy in his family, his many friendships, both professional and personal, and the love he bore for his country. He proudly flew the flag by the lake in front of his home every day.

His family is grateful for his deep love of Leland, which he passed down to them all.  His two daughters make their homes in the area, as do four of his grandchildren and one of his great grandchildren.  Others within the family visit as often as they can.  He left them with a wonderful appreciation for the local community and an abiding sense of place.

He lived long; he lived honestly; he lived well.  His absence will be deeply felt by both his family and his community.

Larry is survived by his children, David Noling, Susan Pandorf, and Jamie May; sixteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Molly, and his sister, Katherine.

Interment of ashes will be private.  A memorial service will be held in Leland, MI, during the summer of 2021.

Memorials may be directed to the Leelanau Conservancy, P.O. Box 1007, Leland, MI 49654 or Friends of the Leland Township Library, PO Box 736, Leland, MI 49654.

James W. Landry Died September 6, 2020

James W. Landry

Died September 6, 2020

LELAND – James Walsh Landry, 77, of Leland, passed away Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020.

James was born Oct. 17, 1942 in Detroit the son of Arthur and Flavelle (Wood) Landry.  Jim was the third of seven boys and spent much of his childhood running the neighborhood with his brothers in Royal Oak.  You could often find the Landry boys plotting the next prank or building a fort in the woods.  He attended Shrine High School where he had many friends and loved playing football.

It was in high school that Jim discovered his love of music, and with his band he found himself playing in the clubs of Motown as a teenager.  This love of music would continue through the rest of his life resulting in many bands, albums, and a legacy passed on to his daughters.

Jim was a charismatic man who always had a twinkle in his blue eyes. He had a way of summoning a deep belly laugh that would creep up into his throat, only to escape like a short foghorn-like burst of sound. His genuine nature and kind approach to conversation often touched those with whom he came in contact- he had a knack for making people feel special and important. He was loved by many. His best times were spent engaging in a good exchange of ideas over coffee, or playing on the floor with his children or grandchildren. Jim also loved the game of golf and was an avid player. His passion for the game fed his competitive spirit and it became a lifelong obsession. Some say he had a nearly perfect swing.

In 1995, he fulfilled a life-long dream to take his daughters to Ireland for the summer.  Jim brought an ADAT recording system with them to record music while abroad.  That summer, Jim and his daughters wrote and recorded several songs, culminating with a spot on the radio in Ireland.

Jim is survived by his children, Christen K. (Sean Karcher) Landry, Heather R. (Edward Einhorn) Landry, Sarah F. (Aaron) Landry Ryder, Jacqueline W. (Tyler Ford) Landry, Morgan E. Hoxie, Elizabeth C. Landry; his siblings, John (Mary Jo) Landry, Richard (Colleen) Landry, Thomas (Meriellen) Landry, David (Robin) Landry; his grandchildren, Olive Ryder, Edwin Ryder, August Einhorn, Emmett Einhorn, Keira Minor, Dublin Rogers, Felix Ford, Stella Ford; and his nieces and nephews, Meg Navarro, Cate Landry, Christopher Landry, Aubrey Taylor, Ryan Landry, Erin Landry, Greg Renz, Kelly Noto, Blake Dallariva, Michelle Landry and Brian Landry.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arthur Landry II and Robert Landry; and a daughter, Julia Marie Landry (Mary Lou).

Memorial service will be held sometime this spring.

He was employed at Detroit Edison (now DTE Energy) where he began his 38-year career in the Research Department, later in the IT department and retired from the Accounting department. Visitation will take place with social distancing at Martinson Funeral Home on Friday, September 25th from 5:00-7:00 PM followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1025 S Union St. in Traverse City on Saturday, September 26th at 11:00 AM.
