Ruby M. Thomas

PESHAWBESTOWN – Ruby Matilda Thomas, 88, of Peshawbestown, passed away on Wednesday, July 24 at Tendercare Birchwood in Traverse City.

  Ruby was born on April 28, 1925 in Peshawbestown, the daughter of Howard and Grace (Peshaba) Davis.  On February 14, 1946 she married Russell R. Thomas who preceded her in death in 2004.

  First and foremost Ruby was a loving mother and wife.  She worked most of her life in North Carolina, living there from 1953 to 2002.  Ruby found time to tend to her large and beautiful flower garden.  She loved her family and heritage and always made time to spend summers in Michigan.  Ruby and Russell moved back to Michigan permanently in 2002.  Ruby was a fantastic baker, once owning her own bakery.  Everyone who had the pleasure of enjoying her baking skills will never forget the great love and care she put into each and every one.

  A loyal and dedicated American, Ruby served her country faithfully in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

  Ruby is survived by her children, Gail (Rusty Pyawasy) Diaz, Galen William “Billy” (Patti) Thomas; step-sister, Karen (Wally) Wallietz; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

  In addition to her husband, Ruby was preceded in death by two sons, Don and Bobby Thomas; and great grandson, Markus Tarlton.

  A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 3, at 11 a.m. at Kateri Tekakwitha Church in Peshawbestown with a visitation held one hour prior.  Burial will follow at Kateri Tekakwitha Cemetery.

LAKE LEELANAU – Carol Martha Plamondon, 91, of Lake Leelanau passed away Sunday, July 21, 2013 at Tendercare of Leelanau.

  Carol was born on Dec. 26, 1921 in Northport, the daughter of Oscar and Lulu (Hurd) Bartlett.

  Carol grew up on a farm in Northport, the youngest daughter in a family of eight.  She graduated from Northport High School and was always proud to have been the salutatorian of her class.

  Carol was married to Bill Pertner, with whom she had four sons.  On May 9, 1954, she married Noah (Skeex) Plamondon.  They had two daughters and were married for more than 50 years until his death in 2005.

  Carol worked for many years at the Lake Leelanau post office, often serving as a substitute mail carrier.  She was a hardworking volunteer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, and taught sewing and knitting to members of the local 4H Club.  She was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Parish.  Carol loved politics, birdwatching, eating popcorn, taking scenic drives, and sharing warm memories of her years on the farm.  She also loved kids, and one of the highlights of her year was Halloween night - when she would photograph all the visiting trick-or-treaters.

  Carol is survived by her sons, Allen (Liz) Pertner of Lyons, CO, O. Fredrich Pertner of Acme; daughters, Amy (Tom) Nugent of Hastings, Janet (Chuck) Smith of Milford; daughter-in- law, Jackie Pertner of Bellevue; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

  In addition to her husband, Noah, she was preceded in death by sons, William J. Pertner and Terry R. Pertner; grandchild, Lindsey Smith; and daughter-in-law, Georgina “Ina” Pertner.

  Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.  The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 26 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption in Lake Leelanau with a visitation held one hour prior.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.  The Rev. Michael Janowski will serve as celebrant.

SUTTONS BAY – Robert Thomas Roubal, 78, of Suttons Bay, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Munson Hospice House surrounded by his loving family.

  Bob was born June 24, 1935 in Suttons Bay the son of Thomas Wencil Roubal and Catherine Julian (Stallman) Roubal.  On Oct 6, 1956 in St. Wenceslaus Church of Gills Pier, he married his loving of 56 years, Diana H. (Rich) Roubal, who survives.
  Bob was a life-long resident of Suttons Bay.  He was a former owner of the Sinclair gas station.  As a young man he used to play the concertina with his father at local dances.  He loved to play cards; his favorite games were euchre and pepper.
  He was chief of the Suttons Bay-Bingham Volunteer Fire Department from Dec. 18, 1967 to Dec. 6, 1972.  He also worked for the Leelanau County Road Commission for 23 years and 6 years as an elected official.
  Bob is survived by his wife, Diana; five children, Steven M. (Joyce) Roubal, Deborah M. Roubal, R. Lee Roubal, Geoffrey M. Roubal, Brian K. (Lauren) Roubal; five siblings, Victor J. (Cyndee) Roubal, Gerald (Beverly) Roubal, Lewis (Roberta) Roubal; Mary (William) Wickert, Pauline (Bruce) Ellsworth; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
  He was preceded in death by his brothers, Willard; Henry and Joseph, both in infancy.
  The mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 22 with visitation one hour prior to the service and the rosary to be recited at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church of Lake Leelanau. 
Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Father Michael Janowski will serve as celebrant.

Robert J. Womac

Died July 16, 2013

LELAND AND BELLEVILLE – Robert Joseph Womac, 70, of Leland and Belleville, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 in Leland.

  Robert was born on May 12, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Frank and Celia (Rybak) Womac.  On May 22, 1965 in Detroit, he married Pauline Elizabeth Gaunt, who survives.
  Robert spent his career with the Ford Motor Co. for 36 years, retiring as Vice President.  He then spent two years as Executive Vice-President of Visteon.
  Bob’s proudest moments were being Plant Manager for the Ford Motor Co. in Ypsilanti and Rawsonville and forming EFHD (Electrical Fuel & Handling Division).  Bob had 11 enjoyable, fun-filled, and relaxing retirement years.  
He loved to read, play golf, bridge, Sudoku or any game, and spending time on Lake Michigan.  His pride and joy was his wife, family and friends.
  Bob is loved, cherished, and survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Pauline; his four children, Darlene (Eric) Montgomery, James (Monica) Womac, Beth (David) Chie, Robert (Alison) Womac; a brother, James (Christina) Womac; 11 grandchildren; and many friends.  All those who knew and loved Bob felt truly blessed.
  Visitation will be held on Friday, July 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. with a wake service at 7 p.m. at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.  The funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 20 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption church in Lake Leelanau with a visitation held one hour prior.  Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.  The Rev. Michael Janowski will serve as celebrant.

Marilyn L. Stallman

LAKE LEELANAU – Marilyn Louise Stallman, 83, of Lake Leelanau passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013 at home surrounded by her loving family.

  Marilyn was born Sep. 24, 1929 in Leland the daughter of Henry John Steffens and Amelia Edith (Nelson) Steffens. 

  Marilyn graduated from Leland High School and was very active in her community.  She worked at the Depot Restaurant, Falling Waters Lodge, Fountain Point and Fischer’s Happy Hour.

  She volunteered for many local organizations including the American Cancer Society, Cub Scouts and Brownies.  She loved reading, doing puzzles and listening to music.

  Marilyn deeply loved her family immensely and they; along with special Aunts Babe Van Raalte and Alida Lawson, were her best friends. 

  Marilyn is survived by her partner, William Harold Midyett; a son, Leo (Linda) Henry Stallman Jr., three daughters, Pamela (Anthony) Louise Hurst, Gail (Bill) Lynn Ericson, Janice Sue (Vic) Kiessel; a sister, Gwendolyn Egeler; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeremy, Johanna, Brittany, Chad, Elizabeth, Michael; ten great grandchildren, Dylan, Kaleb, Brendon, Rebekka, Jordan, Ayden, Nathan, Rosie, Kellen and Brooklyn.

  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leo Henry Stallman Sr., her siblings, Louis Steffens, Helen Westol and Hank Steffens.

  The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 27 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Leland with the family welcoming friends one hour prior to the service.  Private family burial will be held at a later date in East Leland Cemetery.  Reverend Lawrence K. Matro will officiate.
